Position Duties

The total salary range for the Maintenance Worker I classification is $64,604.80 – $78,582.40 annually. The actual salary shall be determined by the final candidate’s qualifications and experience.

Maintenance Worker I responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

Landscape: The responsibilities of this position include performing labor in the planting, cultivating, trimming, removing, watering, and spraying of lawns, plants and other vegetation, picking-up garbage, and litter around the City facilities and auxiliary area, Installing and repairing sprinkler lines and irrigation systems, and performing other related duties as assigned.

Facility Maintenance: Participates in, or performs, a variety of semi-skilled tasks such as cleaning catch basins and plugged sewers; repairing and unplugging sewer laterals, mains and storm drains; repairing and replacing water lines; Cleaning and lubricating machinery, engines, and equipment using steam and solvents; working alongside facility maintenance crews to perform other related duties as assigned.
 
This position requires grasping, reaching, bending, pulling, kneeling, crouching, squatting, lifting, carrying objects 50 pounds or heavier to complete the described job duties; and standing and walking are performed intermittently.

Minimum Qualifications

Education:  Completion of high school or equivalent (General Educational Development [GED] Test or California Proficiency certificate) 

Experience: one (1) year of experience in the maintenance and repair of streets, sewers, parks, athletic fields, or public facilities.

Required Licensing (such as driver’s license, certifications, etc.)

Possession of a valid driver’s license authorizing operation of a motor vehicle in the State of California.

The ideal candidate will possess the following competencies, as demonstrated in past and current employment history. Desirable competencies for this position include:
 
Job Expertise: Demonstrates knowledge of and experience with applicable professional/technical principles and practices, Citywide and departmental procedures/policies, and federal and state rules and regulations including:

  • Technical knowledge and experience in the following maintenance fields: Landscape, and Sewer Maintenance Demonstrates knowledge of the materials, tools, and equipment used in the maintenance fields listed above as well as preventive maintenance procedures and safety practices.
  • Knowledge and application of safety practices and procedures in equipment maintenance work.

Physical Requirements:

Possess ability to:

  • Move between/within work areas, including but not limited to sitting, standing, and walking on various surfaces, turning, bending, grasping, and making repetitive hand movements.
  • Communicate in person and over the telephone or radio.
  • Maintain professional demeanor during interactions with staff, customers, and the public.

When assigned to an office environment, possess ability to:

  • Operate, access, enter, and retrieve data using standard office equipment, including but not limited to a computer or tablet.
  • Read printed materials and a computer screen.
  • Be exposed to moderate noise levels and controlled temperature conditions.

When assigned to fieldwork, possess ability to:

  • Maintain strength, stamina, and mobility to perform medium to heavy physical work.
  • Lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects averaging a weight of 50 pounds, or heavier weights, in all cases with the use of proper equipment.
  • Identify problems or hazards, work in confined spaces and around machines, and climb/descend ladders.
  • Operate, inspect, and repair varied hand and power tools and construction equipment.
  • Operate a motor vehicle and visit various City sites.
  • Be exposed to unpredictable working conditions including but not limited to loud noise levels, cold and hot temperatures, inclement weather conditions, road hazards, vibration, confining workspace, chemicals, mechanical and/or electrical hazards, hazardous physical substances, fumes, dust, and air contaminants.

Selection Process
The selection process will consist of an evaluation of the applicant’s training and experience based on the application and responses to the Job Specific Questions. Only the candidate whose backgrounds best match the position will be invited to proceed in the selection process. Additional phases of the selection process will consist of one or more interviews, one of which may include a practical/writing exercise.
