The Associated Press seeks an
experienced major gifts officer that will manage funding
development for AP’s award-winning investigative journalism.
Reporting to the Director of Development, this manager will
be a key member of the AP’s Philanthropic Development team and
bring experience working with individual and family donors. To help
grow this exciting new funding area, the position will conduct
broad-based outreach to foundations and major donors, build
philanthropic interest and awareness in AP’s investigative news
priorities and initiatives, develop customized proposals and donor
appeals, secure gifts and grants, and steward and manage donor
relationships.
The ideal candidate will have a
successful track record of launching or growing a major gifts
program in investigative news or managing a major gift program at a
substantial nonprofit newsroom. The individual will have experience
in individual and family philanthropy including major donors,
family foundations and offices, donor advisors, and philanthropic
advisors. The candidate will be an exceptional relationship manager
and a passionate ambassador for The Associated Press’ independent,
fact-based and nonpartisan journalism. The candidate will be
comfortable collaborating with AP investigative news staff and
editorial leadership. Travel will be required.
For more than 50 years, AP’s global
investigative team has been producing world-changing reports such
as accounts of slave labor in the seafood industry and documenting
war crimes in Ukraine.
Specific
responsibilities include:
thoughtful strategic vision and plan to expand AP’s donor base to
include individuals and families.
create customized proposals and pitches; and secure gifts and
grants.
managing renewal requests, pitches, events, and appeals.
priorities with philanthropic partners and supporters.
distributing reports to share the inspiring story of AP’s
investigations, and manage events.
in the philanthropic field.
philanthropic development operations, working alongside a talented,
remote-based team.
Qualifications: The manager must
have a demonstrated track record of success in managing a major
donor portfolio of gifts at the $10,000-$100,000 level. Ideal
candidates will bring fundraising experience in journalism,
or hold the understanding and communication skills to
articulate the significance of investigative journalism to societal
well-being and functioning. Applicants must exhibit strong
communications and relationship skills while working effectively as
a member of a team. Self-motivation and solid time and task
management skills are also important as the manager will need to
juggle often competing priorities. Applicants should have at least
5+ years of full-time relevant experience.

Location: This position may be remote or hybrid
depending on location.
Compensation &
Benefits: The anticipated salary range for this
position is $115,000 – $145,000, contingent on experience and other
job-related factors. Employees are eligible to participate,
according to the terms of the official plan documents, in a 401(k)
plan, employer-sponsored health insurance plan, and are eligible
for paid time off and holidays in accordance with AP policy.
