The Opportunity
The Manager, Library and Archives provides leadership and direction and is accountable for planning and managing the development and operations of the Paul D. Fleck Library and Archives. This role is concerned with five general areas: human resource management, facility management, collection management, technology management, and financial management. In addition, the Manager will conduct the normal activities of the library professional: reference, collection development, cataloging, outreach, and research to keep abreast of trends in library and archives.
Specific Accountabilities
Library Services
-Define the long-term objectives of the library in consultation with senior management of Banff Centre.
In consultation with artistic program directors, acquire new materials for the collection.
-Budget development, management, and financial reporting.
-Foster a welcoming and accessible space that encourages visitation and use of the Library and Archives by participants, staff, and the public.
-Respond to research and reference requests requiring specialized knowledge related to program offerings, specialized library tools and resources.
-Select, train, and develop human resources to fulfill the departmental, operational and service mandate. Have a sound knowledge of the Collective Agreement and ensure compliance.
-Develop an awareness of alternate forms of librarianship such as electronic and image-based data systems in order to supplement collections held on campus.
-Maintain an awareness of emerging creative and leadership trends, which may shape the marketing and delivery of programs within Banff Centre.
-Oversee the maintenance and communication of copyright policies and procedures for Banff Centre in consultation with the General Counsel and Board Relations.
-Develop acquisition strategies and collections management strategies that are forward looking, have an eye to diverse voices and perspectives, and will serve the library’s membership across all creative platforms into the future.
-Evaluate donated materials to the library collections for possible acquisition.
-Oversee, with direct participation where necessary, the information technology resources used in the library and/or facilitated by the library (e.g. remote access to online catalogue and electronic resources.) Some of this work may also be in partnership with other departments (e.g. Information Technology and Services) and outside partnerships or projects.
-Gather, correlate and report Library statistics for both in-house use and trend analysis, as well as for external reporting as required (e.g. AAAL, TAL, etc.)
-Work with Marketing and Communications on promotional and storytelling opportunities highlighting the Library and Archives on social media and other platforms.
-Develop and maintain good working relationships with other libraries, both within the province and nationally by developing appropriate communications channels and through membership in the appropriate societies.
Archives
-Develop and maintain a knowledge of professional archives techniques, records management, and policies in cooperation with the Archivist.
-Define long term objectives in archives and records management in consultation with senior management of Banff Centre and the Archivist.
-Work with the Archivist to maintain a public interface to the archival and records collections as appropriate.
-Encourage and develop good records management practices Centre-wide.
-Oversight of rights and permissions and the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act legislation as it applies to Archival holdings and use.
-Supervise the Archivist in the search for and acquisition of appropriate materials to form the historical record of the Banff Centre, as well as making recommendations regarding the security of records within departments.
Qualification and Educational Requirements
– 5 years of relevant work experience. In addition to library work experience, archives work experience is an asset.
-ALA accredited Master’s degree in library and information science
-Knowledge at the specialist level in one or more of the arts programming areas of Banff Centre (performing arts, music, art history, visual arts, literature)
-Ability to effectively lead and manage a team
-Forward-thinking with an ability to anticipate and prepare for changing demands for and uses of archival information
-Good communication skills with the ability to relate to and encourage a wide range of users
-Strong research skills in order to help users’ access materials
-Keen attention to detail and accuracy
-The ability to anticipate and respond to the changing needs of a complex institutional environment
-The ability to work independently and as part of a team
-Competence in administrative procedures and project management skills
-Ability to carry out independent research
-Experience working in OCLC WorldShare software is an asset
Employment Terms & Benefits
-In accordance with the terms of employment governing Management/PSP employees, this is a permanent, full-time position, subject to a 6 month probationary period.
-Working 37.5 hours per week, the annual salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
