The League of Women Voters, a nonpartisan political organization, has fought for over 100 years to improve American systems of government and impact public policies through education, advocacy, and litigation. The enduring vitality and resonance of the League as a trusted force for change and good government comes from its unique decentralized structure: a national organization with strong partnerships at the grassroots level with more than 760 state and local Leagues across the country including the District of Columbia. At the national level, League activities are coordinated and staffed by two distinct but complimentary organizations: The League of Women Voters of the United States (LWVUS) and the League of Women Voters Education Fund (LWVEF). 

POSITION SUMMARY

The League of Women Voters, a 103-year-old organization with more than 750 chapters across all 50 states and the District of Columbia, is expanding to include a managerial position focused on organizational governance.

The Manager of Governance will be responsible for promoting nonprofit best practices, integrating DEI principles in governance strategies, identifying gaps and solutions, and providing rapid response to the field. They also will assist with development, and alignment of key policies and processes to ensure the health and vibrancy of the League network. They will have experience navigating large, complex organizations through influence and collaboration. It is also essential that the person have experience in managing high-level relationships with discretion and in handling sensitive and confidential information. This position reports to the Chief of Culture.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Promote nonprofit best practices across the League network
  • Create and disseminate governance and nonprofit management resources for organization’s volunteers
  • Facilitate a strong, effective, and collaborative working relationship across staff teams and with the Board of Directors (including Committees and Chair).
  • Provide training (from large groups to 1:1 coaching) to volunteer leaders and staff
  • Establish protocols to address field challenges and provide rapid response as needed
  • Staff board/volunteer committees and/or meetings as assigned
  • Deepen field understanding of core policy areas – nonpartisanship and diversity, equity and inclusion- to align with governance strategies, processes, and policies.
  • Promote organization-wide awareness of DEI with a global lens, ensuring locally relevant content of DEI issues
  • Collaborate on the organization’s Framing the Future transformation journey and implementation of associated system changes
  • Stay current on emerging topics that are relevant to network leaders
  • Manage other projects as assigned

EDUCATION/CERTIFICATIONS

  • College degree, plus; A minimum of 5 years of nonprofit or association experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • DEI certification (preferred)

SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES

  • Excellent organizational and and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to center DEI in governance strategies.
  • Ability to connect with a wide variety of people across lines of differences; strong written and verbal communication.
  • The ability to maintain a high degree of professionalism, flexibility, confidentiality, and diplomacy with staff and volunteer members and leaders.
  • Be flexible in changing circumstances, able to deal with various issues, and able to handle multiple tasks concurrently.As the League is non-partisan, the incumbent must also be able to maintain a non-partisan approach to people and projects.
  • Work well independently as well as with organizational entities.
  • Strong attention to detail, with demonstrated ability to prioritize work.
  • Understanding of diversity, equity, and inclusion principles 
  • Alignment with the League’s mission and values. 

 

SALARY AND BENEFITS

The salary range for this position is $85,000 – $90,000. We have a generous benefits package that includes 95 percent employer –sponsored health insurance, dental and vision insurance, paid holidays, vacation days, sick days, pre-tax transit benefits, and a generous 401(K) plan. This is a remote position.
