Job Description:
The Department of Extension Operations with Iowa State University Extension and Outreach is seeking qualified candidates for a Manager of Professional Development, which will be hired as a Manager Programs.
The manager will lead the Professional Development Unit in direct support of Iowa State University Extension and Outreach’s strategic plan with an overall purpose of aligning professional skills with organizational needs by conceptualizing, designing, and facilitating development opportunities that will motivate, challenge, strengthen, and enlighten county and campus-paid staff, faculty, and elected council officials. The Manager of Professional Development will provide vision, leadership, oversight, and guidance for internal needs assessment, development, implementation, and formative and summative evaluation of organization-wide professional development opportunities. This includes professional development for ISU-based faculty and staff, county staff, and education regarding Extension and Outreach scholarship and impacts reporting.
This position will organize, oversee, and secure expertise for interdisciplinary in-service training and facilitation in the areas of new employee orientation, cultural competency development, virtual education, ISU Extension and Outreach core competencies, Extension Leadership Academy, Organizational Mentor Program and Mentor Academy. They will also support education in program accountability; effective communication and engagement; reporting system development, implementation, training, and monitoring; strategic planning; and program development, evaluation, and delivery. The Manager will work with an advisory committee, composed of faculty and staff from throughout ISU Extension and Outreach, to determine professional development needs and niches for the Organization. The incumbent will support ISU Extension and Outreach program leadership with technical assistance and expert resources to facilitate implementation of the program development process, including program needs assessment, curricular and instructional design, implementation, and evaluation, as well as content-driven professional development for staff and faculty. This position will be involved in hiring and the direct supervision and management of several P&S employees, while also be indirectly involved in the hiring, supervising, and management of additional P&S and hourly staff, as needed.
The successful candidate will have exceptional public relations, leadership, and oral, written and listening skills; strong organization and time management skills; excellent interpersonal skills; and the ability to work with a wide variety of individuals. The candidate also will possess a highly positive and enthusiastic style and be capable of motivating others with flexibility in exercising both leadership and team membership roles. The candidate will have the ability to use current web resources/technology and distance-bridging technologies to expand learning opportunities. This includes competency in using electronic outreach methods and equipment for Extension and daily work activities. To be successful in this position, the candidate will need to regularly research, interpret, and synthesize information. In addition, the candidate will represent Extension and Outreach in a professional, ethical manner, exercising discretion, confidentiality, and judgment in all interactions. A master’s degree in an appropriate field(e.g. education, organizational development, etc.) is strongly preferred and a PhD is preferred.
Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. on an on-going basis without sponsorship.
