Job Summary
This level covers positions responsible for managing a broad range of functions, resources, and systems of considerable scope within an academic or administrative unit.
The Manager is responsible for developing, operationalizing and growing the newly established Institute for Global Health at BC Children’s and Women’s Hospital. The IGH-BCCWH is an initiative of the BC Children’s and Women’s Hospital + Health Centre (BCCWH), Executive leadership team and is a BCCWH campus-wide endeavour, that works closely with both local and international partners. The Manager requires strong leadership and strategic thinking skills coupled with strong planning, communication and negotiation skills. The Manager will be a key contributor to all aspects of establishing the IGH-BCCWH from concept through to implementation and evaluation.
Organizational Status
This position is located in the Department of APT in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of British Columbia, and is located at BC Children’s and Women’s Hospital. This position reports to the Executive Medical Directors and works directly with the Institute’s leadership and governing bodies. Additionally, this position will represent the Institute with external agencies, global healthcare leaders, international organizations active in global health and global partners.

This position is key in the effective implementation of the global health program at BCCWH and supported by the Hospital Leadership to develop global health at BCCWH. The incumbent is responsible for nurturing and maintaining relationships with leaders, clinical faculty, academics, practitioners and government partners. The incumbent makes professional decisions and recommendations on all aspects of the work. Errors made may lead to confusion, lost opportunities and a poor impression of the department and its partners, as well as loss of reputation for the Executive Committee, particularly the Executive Medical Directors.
This position will be responsible for access, collection, use and disclosure of personal information in accordance with the BC Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (RSBC 1996) and other UBC privacy and security policies. This position requires employees to work under strict confidentiality requirements; internal procedures and policies to protect personal information must be followed and adherence to these requirements will be regularly reviewed by the employer.

The Global Health Strategy Manager works independently, reporting to the Executive Medical Directors.

Supervise staff and students as required. Provides direction and/or training around departmental policy and operations.
Minimum Qualifications
Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum of five years of related experience, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications
Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum of five years of related experience, or the equivalent combination of education and experience, working at a hospital or academic environment preferred (ideally at publicly funded institution). Experience working at a management level within an academic setting with related experience in strategy development and implementation of academic and research programs. Experience in an administrative role managing complex relationships, preferably in a University environment or other large organization is also desirable. Faculty and leadership experience in a university environment preferred. Knowledge and experience in organizational governance. Demonstrated experience in financial, human resources and communications management.
Proven ability to work with or direct and lead a team. Proven ability assessing opportunities in a variety of science and technical disciplines. Excellent research, analytical, negotiation, partnership development, project management, organizational and interpersonal skills. Ability to deal tactfully with a diversity of people in a calm, courteous, and effective manner. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Mastery of English grammar and punctuation is essential, with the ability to read health research text analytically and critically, and make substantive editorial recommendations to improve readability, clarity and impact.
Superior writing and effective translation of complex scientific information into clear and succinct language for a broader audience is essential. Creative problem solving and decision-making; mentorship abilities. Computer competency with knowledge of spreadsheet, database, and word processing applications. Ability to work at the highest strategic levels, to gain and maintain the respect of senior administration and also to take strategy and move it through to tactics and action. Ability to be comfortable, credible and persuasive within academic, government or business environments; ability to initiate, build and nurture academic and research partnerships. Demonstrated effective leadership, motivational and planning abilities. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and interact with empathy, understanding, and humility with people from diverse backgrounds and with diverse identities, perspectives, and behaviors. Ability to manage staff performance by establishing standards and goals, evaluating performance, providing feedback and taking corrective action.
