Position description

Humanity United is seeking a hands-on and collaborative Manager, People to help ensure that HU’s people practices support our team and advance our mission, strategy and goals.

This role operates as a key partner for staff and leaders across the organization. The successful candidate will manage projects and processes including HR policy development and administration, leaves of absence, professional development, ADA support, equity-embedded practices, knowledge management and internal communications. This role will also co-lead full-cycle recruitment and contribute to compensation, performance management and staff survey processes, bringing a DEIJ lens to all aspects of their work.

The successful candidate will have an equity-centered HR generalist background with in-depth experience and knowledge across multiple aspects of HR/People Operations, ideally including HR policy & compliance, professional development, recruitment and performance management. In-depth knowledge of California employment law is strongly preferred, and strong project management and collaboration capabilities are a must.

This is a full-time, exempt role, reporting to the Senior Director, People. A location in or near the San Francisco Bay Area is strongly preferred. Our hybrid work approach provides ongoing flexibility for regular remote work for this position, combined with periodic in-person gatherings (including 2x all-staff gatherings and 2x team gatherings per year).

 

Core Job Responsibilities:

 HR Advice and Strategy

  • Contribute to development of People team strategy and annual team roadmap
  • Build constructive relationships with all staff across HU, serving as a trusted and highly accessible resource for advice and guidance
  • Provide practical and reliable advice to HU staff on People/HR matters, serving as a key point person for team member inquiries related to HR policy and practice
  • Participate in cross-organizational teams as needed, to support the delivery of People/HR and broader organizational priorities and projects

Continuous Improvement

  • Help continuously improve HU’s People systems, processes, and policies, with a focus on embedding equity and implementing DEIJ best practices to foster a trauma-informed and inclusive culture of belonging

People Operations:

  • Manage HR policy and compliance processes including:
  • Administer and continuously improve HU’s HR policies and procedures, to ensure they are equity-centered, aligned with best practice and compliant with state and federal law.
  • HU’s leaves of absence processes, with specialized attention to FMLA, ADA, state and local leave laws, and short-term or long-term disability plans
  • Be a key point of contact for ADA accommodations and workers compensation matters across the organization, with support from the Senior Director
  • Plan, manage and implement professional development programs for staff across HU, including formal, network-based and informal development opportunities
  • Co-lead full cycle recruitment and onboarding with the Associate Manager, People, including:
  • Posting open positions and sourcing candidates, with an emphasis on generating and maintaining diverse candidate pipelines
  • Supporting hiring teams with reviewing applications, interview logistics, scheduling and candidate care
  • Coordinating onboarding logistics and scheduling for new hires
  • Contribute to regular organizational processes including:
  • Total rewards – compensation and benefits
  • Performance management – performance conversations, employee relations, goal setting
  • Organizational culture & engagement survey and regular staff wellbeing pulse surveys
  • Manage internal staff communications regarding People team activities, policies & procedures, to help provide clarity and transparency for all staff via timely, targeted, and audience-appropriate communications. Coordinate People team-related content for weekly all-staff email.

 Project Management

  • Manage and co-lead assigned projects within the People team’s annual workplan. Examples may include but not be limited to:
  • Development of a suite of People Operations metrics for use in decision making and HR strategy
  • DEIJ projects and initiatives aligned with specific org-wide and team-level DEIJ priorities and commitments
  • Contributing to the development and implementation of an organizational competency model
  • Documentation of People team processes and decision-making frameworks
  • Helping evolve HU’s remote/hybrid policies and practices

External Engagement

  • Monitor and share external developments and thought leadership relevant to HU’s People/HR programs and practices.
  • Regularly deepen and diversify own external professional networks

Qualifications

 Must-have requirements:

  • Familiarity and fluency with DEIJ principles and their application in People/HR practices and operations
  • Ability to maintain the highest levels of confidentiality at all times

People Operations

  • Demonstrated experience in progressively more complex HR roles, ideally including:
  • HR/People Operations experience in a multi-state organization with remote staff and/or a distributed workforce; and/or
  • Experience developing and implementing equity-focused HR practices within a mission-driven organization
  • Strong knowledge of US federal, state, and local employment laws, including California employment law.
  • Proven practical experience across multiple areas of HR, ideally including at least three of the following: compensation, recruitment, benefits, talent development, employee relations, performance management and/or organizational development.

Collaboration & Communication

  • Ability to collaborate effectively with people at all levels, including senior leaders, cross-functional teams, working groups, staff across the org, and external partners and vendors.
  • Demonstrated coaching and conflict resolution skills, with the ability to build consensus, influence and serve as a trusted advisor.
  • Ability to understand the needs of others and provide fit-for-purpose advice and support, including in sensitive or challenging circumstances
  • Strong presentation, facilitation, and written communication skills, with the ability to translate complex HR concepts into concise recommendations.

Planning & Project Management

  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to engage with new challenges.
  • An ability to juggle multiple priorities and navigate ambiguity
  • Exceptional project management skills, including the ability to plan, engage stakeholders, adapt as needed, and conduct after-action reviews.

Other

  • Ability to travel domestically (estimated 10-20%)
  • The right to work in the United States

 

It’s a bonus if you bring:

  • Direct lived experience of the issues we work on.
  • Formal qualifications in Human Resources, Business, Management or a related discipline, or equivalent qualifications, or equivalent experience.
  • SHRM, HRCI or ATD accreditation, or equivalent experience preferable
  • Experience in globally distributed organizations with an international workforce.

Salary: The salary range for this position will vary by geographic location to account for local job market & cost of living. Starting salaries within the range are based on job-related skills, experience and background. At HU, salary progression is based on performance and proficiency in a role over time. 

Example starting salary ranges are provided below, with other locations available on request. We will share more about the starting and full salary range for your preferred location during the hiring process.

  • San Francisco – $122,473 – $136,081
  • New York – $116,332 – $129,258
  • Washington DC/Boston/Seattle/LA – $110,193 – $122,436
  • Chicago, Denver/Boulder, Philadelphia – $104,054 – $115,615
