About the role:
Victoria Legal Aid (VLA) is thrilled to announce an exciting opportunity to launch our new Remand Support and Advocacy Service at Melbourne’s Bail and Remand Court (BARC). We are seeking an innovative leader with a strong social justice background to lead this pilot program.
The new service seeks to address the non-legal needs of individuals facing their first remand, including understanding their rights and the legal process, supporting access to services. You will collaborate with a dedicated team and a Senior Lived Experience Consultant, bringing expertise in social work, criminal justice, and advocacy. As Manager, you will work closely with VLA’s summary crime project, including a lived experience consultant and senior leadership to shape service design and strategies. This will include improving team capabilities for advocacy, fostering relationships with stakeholders like Court Services Victoria and Aboriginal Legal Services, and integrating lived experience into service delivery across VLA’s advocacy initiatives. This role also requires on-call availability to ensure the seamless operation and success of this transformative initiative.
This role is based at our Melbourne CBD office on Wurundjeri Country.
About you:
As our ideal candidate, you will possess:
- Exceptional leadership skills and demonstrated success in change management, particularly in designing and implementing new services.
- Adaptability to dynamic environments and a creative problem-solving approach.
- Strong ability to cultivate and maintain relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including justice agencies and Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations.
- Dedication to integrating lived experience perspectives into service design, collaborating with a Lived Experience Consultant and advisory group.
- Comprehensive understanding of the justice system, human rights frameworks, and challenges faced by individuals in remand or custody.
- Demonstrated capability to drive organisational change and support team adaptation in a supportive environment.
- Management experience in social work, criminal justice, community development, advocacy, service provision or other similar fields (mandatory)
