  • Hours: Full-time, 40 hours per week
  • Schedule: May vary, but will include day, evening, and weekend hours (including some Sundays)
  • Starting Annual Salary:$57,414
  • FLSA Status: Exempt

Position Summary

Under limited direction, the Manager, Social Work supervises the day-to-day operations of the social work staff of the Indianapolis Public Library. The Manager is responsible to plan, direct and oversee the operations and fiscal health of the department. The Manager provides departmental leadership and direction in support of the organization’s goals through staffing, training, performance management and directing department workflow. The Manager is also responsible for planning and maintaining work systems, procedures, and policies that enable optimal performance of employees, volunteers and other resources within the department. The Manager provides formal and informal training to staff. The Manager represents Indianapolis Public Library interests in interactions with area social service agencies, governmental entities, and other relevant organizations.

A successful candidate will…

  • Have a Master’s Degree in social work from a CSWE-accredited school.
  • Have a social work license in Indiana (LSW or LCSW).
  • Have three to five years of post-MSW practice experience required, including experience in at least some of the following- case management, crisis intervention, de-escalation, training, advocacy, and/or program evaluation with people.
  • Be bilingual in Spanish and English (preferred but not required).
  • Have experience supervising BSW and/or MSW students (preferred but not required).

What does the job look like?

  • Hires, trains and evaluates performance management for assigned personnel and volunteers.
  • Conducts regular staff meetings to communicate information to staff, listens to staff concerns and reports them to senior management as appropriate.
  • Directs the plans for services and programs for the community; schedules, delivers and evaluates programs based on feedback from participants, changing demographics, customer needs and interests.
  • Coaches, models, and serves as a resource for staff in best practices related to working with vulnerable populations and customers.
  • Develops partnerships with area agencies and stakeholders in order to provide services within the library or make referrals to off-site services available to library patrons. Participates in community engagement and outreach, and assists in community-based initiatives.
  • Provides expert information as part of library planning processes, leads projects that intersect with services to vulnerable or at-risk populations, identifies and advocates for vulnerable populations, and helps guide efforts to evaluate and assess service delivery to at-risk customers.
  • Works with Manager, Safety and Security to develop processes and procedures that apply equitably and create a safe and comfortable library environment for all patrons and staff.
  • Represents the library in networking with other agency representatives and at community meetings, as related to the essential duties.
  • Makes recommendations regarding policy and procedure development and implementation.
  • Serves as a resource for library administration and policy-makers on issues relevant to patrons experiencing mental health issues, substance abuse, unstable housing, or exclusion issues.
  • Tracks trends among library-based social workers and other relevant service providers, exchanges knowledge with peer libraries and agencies, and implements promising new practices.
  • Supervise social work practicum .
  • Initiate, participate, and collaborate with Library staff on projects, committees, and trainings in collaboration with Manager, Talent and Development and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Officer.
  • Able to work the normally scheduled work time for this position.
  • Able to cope with daily job-related stress.
