Purpose

To work in a team delivering a programme of works to
reintroduce native estuarine species and habitats in the Tees Estuary. We are seeking a reliable
and independent intern with a passion for environmental restoration to join our team. Under
supervision from the Project Officer, the Graduate Trainee will assist with planning,
implementation and monitoring of habitat restoration projects in the Tees Estuary.

Based within
Tees Rivers Trust’s small team, you will have excellent opportunities to work collaboratively
within a friendly, multi-disciplinary team of conservation professionals. You will work in a mobile
and agile way to deliver the aims of the project programme. Main objectives of the team include:

  • Recreation of estuarine habitat through trialling the restoration of native oysters, mussels, sea
    grass and seaweed farming
  • Contributing to the design and implementation of estuarine restoration
    projects
  • Providing training and guidance for volunteers related to field restoration work and
    nursery operations and assisting with running engagement events for local schools and local
    community groups

Main Duties & Responsibilities

  • To assist the project team in implementing species reintroduction to the Tees Estuary.
  • To undertake informal and formal training as set out in an agreed Training Plan.
  • To carry out water quality sampling, biological sampling and other aquatic surveys within
    the River Tees catchment.
  • Support engagement with local communities and stakeholders as part of project delivery.
  • Support the organisation of outdoor public volunteer events and support the coordination of
    volunteers.
  • To assist in the development of monitoring and evaluation systems and to document, monitor
    and evaluate all projects in line with funding requirements.
  • To attend regular internal and external meetings as required.
  • To work in a flexible manner and to undertake any other duties and responsibilities as may
    be assigned from time to time, which are commensurate with the grade of the job.

This position is
ideal for those looking to gain hands-on experience in estuarine project management and
environmental restoration. This role will also help with leading volunteer sessions and
supporting education and public outreach events.

This Graduate Trainee post offers hands-on
experience in a marine biology project, honing skills in project management, event
organization, and volunteer management. You will also learn about being part of a small not for
profit team, including fundraising, community development, outreach, database management, and
campaign support.

Qualifications & Skills

  • Fieldwork experience
    and first degree in a relevant field
  • Interest in estuarine ecology, marine biology and
    ecological restoration
  • Ability to work outside in varying terrain and weather
  • Strong
    written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and organize oneself
  • Ability to project a positive image with the community
  • Creative thinker and interest in
    helping to improve and develop new methods and ideas for restoration programmes
  • Confidence in
    working around water and a solid knowledge of health and safety rules for working near open
    water
