The Marine Project Officer I will oversee and support on all aspects of the IUCN’s Marine Programme Projects of the IUCN Oceania Regional Office to ensure that business services are accomplished in an effective, efficient, and timely manner and in compliance with all legislative, policy and procedural guidelines of IUCN, as applicable.
 
  • Provide technical and administrative support to the implementation of the marine project activities undertaken in countries throughout the Oceania Region.
  • Conduct scientific literature reviews to support marine projects including marine spatial planning, marine policy, marine protected areas, nature-based solutions, and managing plastics in the marine environment.
  • Collect and analyze marine baseline data to support GIS based mapping.
  • Support national and regional workshops, and the development of marine awareness materials and activities.
  • Assist in monitoring and regular reporting on the progress of projects against the Marine Programme annual plan and agreed milestones for the programme in each country.
  • Liaise with technical experts and contribute to the production of knowledge products.
  • Represent the Marine Programme at relevant meetings and workshops when required.
  • Assist in the development of internal IUCN reports, and donor reports.
Requirements:
  • A Bachelor of Science focused in marine studies with 3-5 years of experience in marine resource management; or an Master of Science with at least 1-3 years of experience, is preferred.
  • A positive attitude, flexible routine, and a willingness to work in a small office with numerous opportunities to develop your career as a marine scientist.
  • An ability to communicate with a wide range of audiences and cultures. Knowledge of local South Pacific languages is an asset.
  • Strong numerical skills that can be applied to GIS based tasks. Experience with Marxan or other ecosystem-based modeling tools is an asset.
  • Must be able to travel within Fiji and the Pacific region when required.
  • Fluent in English (verbal/written) with excellent written and presentation skills.
  • Proficient in using office applications (MS Word/Excel/PowerPoint) and other web-based management systems.
  • Ability to work under pressure and deal tactfully with sensitive issues.
