Under the supervision of the AS Graphic Studio Creative Manager, the ASGS Marketing and Communications Specialist is responsible for collaborating with ASUCSD student leaders in creating marketing and communication plans for ASUCSD assembly members, programs, services, commissions, and initiatives. Using innovative marketing concepts and multiple applications and platforms, this position participates in the planning, developing, and implementing basic marketing plans and performs duties such as drafting promotional or marketing materials, supporting student-initiated promotional events, and conducting basic market research.
The ASGS Marketing and Communications Specialist provides coordination and creative writing with a passion for social media and an emphasis on marketing and promoting ASUCSD, including social media strategies and posts, preparation and creation of digital media, e-blasts and newsletters, and website content to reach target audiences and designed to improve the awareness and branding of ASUCSD with the campus, faculty & staff and the UC San Diego community.
The ASGS Marketing and Communications Specialist works with ASUCSD, SGAS staff, and other departments to generate multimedia marketing, communications, and promotions to promote various programs and advance the department’s strategic plan, overarching goals, mission, vision, and values. Works creatively with AS Graphic Studio and Triton Outfitters, Associated Students store, in the planning and implementing of effective marketing and branding campaigns. Participates with meeting facilitation and provides customer service through personal appearances/presentations at a variety of on and off campus events, orientations, meetings, and conferences promoting departmental activities and strengthening the brand.
Supports the student public relations assistants, AS marketing teams, and the Chief Communication office in their efforts to promote the ASUCSD programs, events, and initiatives, including assistance with ordering branded and promotional materials, signage and apparel. Assists in hiring, training, developing, as well as providing work direction and editorial oversight for the student staff to ensure projects are completed in an accurate and timely manner.
Uses marketing concepts in performing non-complex responsibilities such as planning, developing and implementing basic marketing plans, drafting promotional or marketing materials, working on marketing events, conducting basic market research, etc.
Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Public Relations, Communications, Journalism plus 2 years writing and public relations experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Knowledge of marketing and branding processes. Knowledge and experience to develop and execute an innovative marketing plan that is integrated with the university’s public image and overall branding strategy.
Solid knowledge of marketing principles, concepts, strategies and best practices. *Demonstrated ability to support and conduct promotional efforts, identifying potential customers, and attracting them to specific programs/events/functions using print, email, digital, web and other mediums.
Demonstrated skill and knowledge to utilize a variety of relevant marketing, photo/video, and design software effectively, InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, Flash, Asana, QuarkXPress, and more – to produce marketing materials, collect and report data, and for organization/maintenance of projects and media.
Demonstrated ability to use journalistic style to write interesting, accurate and comprehensive news and feature articles. Demonstrated experience in writing for Web, eMarketing activities, and utilizing electronic communication tools.
Organizational skills and skills in file creation, maintenance and management. *Strong demonstrated organizational skills with ability to prioritize job functions, meet deadlines and ensure smooth workflow and handle multiple tasks simultaneously, while maintaining attention to detail.
Solid knowledge of web/app software and design. Ability to supervise web/app design and programming.
Knowledge of customer service standards / procedures. *Excellent customer service skills. Ability to communicate in a helpful, pleasant, and informative manner to a wide variety of people, both in person, electronic means, and on the telephone. Ability to effectively handle heavy volume.
Written and interpersonal communication skills. Ability to exercise tact, mature judgment, diplomacy, and flexibility to promote positive working relationships and job effectiveness. Ability to gather information and effectively communicate using a variety of platforms and mediums.
Job offer is contingent upon satisfactory clearance based on Background Check results.
Overtime and weekends may be required.
Mandated Reporter: This position has been identified as a Mandated Reporter pursuant to the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and requires immediate reporting of physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, or neglect of anyone under the age of 18. It is the responsibility of the Mandated Reporter to ensure that they obtain proper training in order to fulfill their reporting responsibilities as required by the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and University policy, and to complete and submit the required reports to the UC San Diego Police Department without delay.

Pay Transparency Act
Annual Full Pay Range: $56,700 – $97,500 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)
Hourly Equivalent: $27.16 – $46.70
Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
