Description

Who are we looking for?

We are currently looking for a Markets Assistant Coordinator to help develop and run a new program at The Depot: mini-market for HLM’s. The job involves both physical tasks and customer service, and requires someone with a calm, yet energetic demeanor who is at ease interacting with people from different backgrounds in a positive and welcoming manner.

Who are we?

Founded in 1986, The Depot is a community-based non-profit organization (NPO) that works collaboratively with its community to address the root causes of hunger and poverty in NDG and the surrounding areas, in a manner that ensures dignity, community engagement, and the development of human potential. Our activities are built around four main pillars: share, grow, cook, and mobilize. To learn more, come visit our website!

The Depot is working towards creating an organizational culture based on dignity, respect, care and openness, where anti-oppression and anti-racism are living and embodied practices. To achieve this, we aim to recruit a team that is representative of NDG’s diverse identities and lived experiences in order for our work to be by and for our communities.

About our new mini-market program for HLM’s

Similarly to our Good Food Market program, we will offer fresh produce and other whole foods, at subsidized prices, in five of the neighborhood’s low-income senior housing complexes (HLMs). The project is in partnership with the New Hope Senior Citizens Centre. Market days will be welcoming, lively and inclusive events where residents will also be invited to gather, join stimulating activities, and increase their social connections.

The first 6 months of the contract will be spent assisting at our outdoor Good Food Markets, while helping to develop the mini-market program, in time for launch in November 2024.

Requirements to apply (mandatory)

  • Must have a valid driver’s license and be comfortable driving a 12 foot cube truck (or willing to learn);
  • Must enjoy, and be capable of, physical and outdoor work.

Key Responsibilities/Tasks:

  • Support the Market Coordinator with the logistics of preparing and carrying out all Good Food Markets
  • Participate in loading and unloading food into and out of trucks (including heavy loads no more than 50lbs);
  • Curate and maintain market display, ensuring that produce is fresh and presentable;
  • Operate the cash register and handle cash balancing at end of each market day;
  • Keep inventory, place and receive orders with suppliers, oversee stocking and rotation of produce;
  • Train and work alongside volunteers;
  • Have a positive attitude and be a leader with co-workers (the team often includes young summer employees).

  • Assist the Good Food Market Coordinator in the development of the new mini-market program
  • Including raising awareness and doing outreach work to promote the new program, in partnership with the New Hope Senior Citizen Centre.

  • After program launch, take a more leading role in carrying out the mini-markets. Which will require you to:
  • Hold several mini-markets each week in the various low-income housing projects in the area;
  • Create and circulate communication materials to animate the markets (Share recipes, preparation methods, nutritional information, highlighting vegetables and their benefits), organize food literacy discussions and activities.

  • All market programs are part of The Depot’s food distribution stream (aka SHARE); therefore, you will take part in some activities related to our emergency food basket program at the Marché Depot
  • Weekly “home delivery” food basket preparation;
  • Support the ongoing operations of the Marché Depot (re-stocking the store & aiding participants) and prep (portioning bulk goods & bread, unloading orders, cleaning).

What we are looking for:

  • Comfort speaking and reading in French and English (additional language is an asset);
  • In good physical shape, comfortable working outdoors;
  • Comfortable interacting with people of different backgrounds in a positive and friendly way;
  • Enjoys working with seniors;
  • Minimal administrative skills (excel spreadsheet) and logistic skills (ex: stock management)
  • Knowledge of fruits and vegetables, and willingness to understand and promote healthy nutrition;
  • Sales experience is an asset;
  • Minimal leadership skills, and ability to guide a small team of staff and volunteers;
  • Ability to work efficiently as a member of a team within a diverse community environment;
  • Knowledge of, and connection to the Notre-Dame-de-Grâce community is a strong asset;
  • A sense of initiative and a desire to take part in the adventure of life at the Depot and its markets!

Contract conditions:

  • Working hours: For the first 6 months: 4 days a week – 28h. Will then be reevaluated to adjust to the demand of The Depot’s food distribution stream (possibility of 5 days a week – 35h)
  • Schedule must include Wednesday and Thursday evenings until 7:30PM

  • Contract start date: June 10, 2024
