Under limited supervision performs highly skilled work in drywall finishing, plaster, and masonry crafts. Duties involve a variety of skilled work on university properties and buildings including new construction of drywall walls and ceilings. Repairing and patching existing drywall to produce a finished surface ready for painting or papering, Patching, and preparing existing plaster walls for paint, smooth or eaves finish.

Department Specific Responsibilities

  • Ability to erect scaffolding.
  • Ability to work off ladders, scaffolding, and lifts safely.
  • Ability to finish drywall including screw heads, tape, bed, skim, install corners, bead, and sand surface to ready for painting.
  • Repair tears and holes in drywall to ready for painting.
  • Ability to clean, prepare, plaster surface, mix product and apply to surface to ready for paint.
  • Assist tile setter including but not limited to installing, patching surface and grouting ceramic tile.
  • Assist masons including but not limited to installing metal door bucks, block work, and pouring concrete.
  • Applies knowledge of tools to complete drywall finishing, plaster, masonry, and tile projects.
  • Applies a textured, sand, or popcorn finish to ceilings

General Responsibilities

  • Studies blueprints, drawings, plans, or sketches to construct, maintain, and repair a variety of masonry structures, such as walls, steps, walkways, concrete pads, floors, curbs, and exterior and interior surfaces and coatings.
  • Shoots grade and lays out site for pouring of footings and foundations. Constructs forms, supports, and bracing systems.
  • Mixes cement, sand, aggregate, additives, and water to produce concrete, grout, mortar, or slurry using hoe, trowel, shovel, or power mixing equipment.
  • Spreads, levels, and smooths concrete using rake, shovel, hand or power trowel, hand or power screed, and float.
  • Molds expansion joints and edges using edging tools, jointers, and straight edge.
  • Mixes and/or applies surface coatings such as sealer, curing and hardening agents, masonry stains, and colorings.
  • Lays and binds building materials such as brick, ceramic tile, concrete block, cinder block, glass block, and terra cotta block with mortar and other substances.
  • Breaks or cuts bricks, blocks, and rough and irregular stone to size using trowel edge, hammer, chisel, or power saw.
  • Calculates angles and courses and determines vertical and horizontal alignment of courses. Determines and implements the best layout to achieve a desired pattern.
  • Repairs and finishes mortar joints between stones, bricks, or blocks of masonry wall. Removes mortar to specified depths using raker, hammer, chisel, power saw, and compressed air.
  • May use mortar bag to force mortar into joints.
  • Cleans and prepares surfaces. Mixes plaster, stucco, and other compounds to desired consistency and applies to walls, ceilings, or partitions of buildings using trowels, brushes, or spray guns. Caulks windows, doors, or cracks in wall with caulking gun.
  • Performs other general building maintenance as needed.
  • Participates in the training of apprentices and/or other workers as needed.
  • Drives vehicle as needed.


EDUCATION

Required

  • High school diploma or equivalent (such as HSED or GED)

WORK EXPERIENCE

Preferred

  • 10 years of verifiable full-time work-related experience as a drywall finisher/plasterer and or the successful completion of 3 years related apprenticeship and six to seven years of verifiable full-time work experience

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES

Required

  • Possesses a valid driver’s license and ability to be insured by Indiana University Upon Date of Hire
  • May be required to acquire and maintain a material-specific abatement certification, supervisor certification or other required certifications

Preferred

  • Journeyman certification

This role regularly requires the ability to effectively communicate. This role frequently requires the ability to handle equipment. This role frequently requires the ability to remain stationary and ascend/descend ladders/stairs. This role requires the ability to move objects weighing up to 50 pounds. The role requires the ability to detect items in proximity as well as far away; discern between colors; detect objects in peripheral space of self; discern items in detail; and to have good depth perception. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.
