Master of Arts (Research Training) Scholarship in Korean Studies supported by Monash Korean Studies AKS Core 2.0 Programme

Remuneration: The successful applicant will receive a 12-month Research Living Allowance, at current value of $34,273 AUD per annum 2024 full-time rate (tax-free stipend).

Please note that the scholarship will be awarded on a yearly basis and contingent on satisfactory academic progress at the end of the first academic year.

A new Master of Arts (Research Training) scholarship is being offered by the Monash University Korean Studies programme supported by the AKS Core Universities Project ‘Monash Korean Studies Beyond Borders: Creating a Global Hub for a New and Diverse Korean Studies.’ The successful candidate will join the Korean Studies Programme and the Monash University Korean Studies Research Hub which was established in 2018 to produce groundbreaking research in Korean Studies.

This scholarship will be offered to a suitable candidate to pursue research in Korean Studies. Please contact Dr Andy Jackson for details. Since this award includes no provision for international tuition fee support, this scholarship is made available only for domestic students. Please note that no relocation expenses, insurance or other costs will be provided as part of this support.

Applications for Korea-related Masters projects include, but are not limited to, pre-modern or modern history, rebellion in Korea, literature, cinema, popular culture and media studies, cultural studies, sociolinguistics and pragmatics, second language acquisition, sociology of media, overseas Koreans, religion, ethnicity and sociology. These areas reflect the research expertise of Monash University Korean Studies staff. It is important that you think clearly about a member of the Monash University Korean Studies staff who will be able to supervise you.

The successful candidate will join a growing and dynamic Korean Studies team with a high research profile and significant teaching experience. At Monash University Korean Studies, we are dedicated to high-level research on Korea and Korea-related areas. We are committed to developing innovative and engaging teaching approaches using the latest technology and fostering an environment in which learning and skills acquisition continues outside the classroom. We aim to provide maximum support to our students and nurture a dynamic environment in which students’ interests in Korea and Korean culture can flourish. Extra-curricular activities include seminars, workshops, conferences, international exchanges, Korean language competitions, trips to Korea, films, discussions, vocational experience schemes and links to businesses.

Candidate Requirements

The successful applicant will have an excellent academic track record and an excellent command of both English and Korean. The successful applicant must have a strong research proposal that is feasible under the Master of Arts (Research Training) timeframe, and which aligns with the expertise of Monash University Korean Studies staff.

In its assessment, the selection committee will prioritize applicants who hold an Australian (or equivalent international) Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field and with first-class honours/H1 awarded (or equivalent).

Scholarship holders must be enrolled full-time and on campus. Successful candidates will be expected to take an active part in the academic and engagement activities of Monash University Korean Studies Research Hub.

Submit an Expression of Interest

EOIs shall comprise:

  • A cover letter that includes a brief statement of the applicant’s suitability
  • A brief research proposal not exceeding 750 words in length that outlines clearly the proposed research topic, why it is worth studying, how they will answer the questions, and a suitable Monash Korean Studies supervisor.
  • A curriculum vitae, including a list of any conference presentations and relevant work experience
  • A full statement of academic record, supported by scanned copies of relevant certified documentation
  • English language proficiency test results (if applicable)
  • Contact details of two academic referees
  • Details about any publication experience (online, print etc if applicable)
  • Copy of your current passport (if available)

At first instance you may discuss your EOI with a suitable Monash Korean Studies supervisor, and then submit your Expression of Interest Form and indicate that you are applying for a “Special Scholarship Scheme – Master of Arts (Research Training) Scholarship in Korean Studies.”

Shortlisted candidates will be interviewed by Zoom video call. The interviews will be conducted in English.

This stipend is supported by the Core University Program for Korean Studies through the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Korea and Korean Studies Promotion Service of the Academy of Korean Studies (AKS-2023-OLU-2250001).
