JOB DESCRIPTION

Job Description

Your responsibilities

Our Mechanical and Materials Engineering (MME) Group is looking for a Materials Engineer to work on Superconducting Radio Frequency research activities.

Within the project, you will participate in material research at CERN, in the Materials, Metrology and NDT section within the EN-MME group, collaborating with the material procurement and fabrication related activities mainly for the High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) and Superconducting Radio Frequency R&D related projects, amongst others the CRAB cavity project. You will be in charge of the planning and execution of microstructural observation and mechanical test based studies related to materials and components (material and assembly qualifications, follow-up of quality controls for industrial and in-house CERN production).

You will have to exploit all observational and analytical tools available in the section such as optical microscopy, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), microanalysis, X-ray diffraction, hardness and tensile testing both at ambient as well as cryogenic temperatures, contactless Digital Image Correlation (DIC) extensometry.

You will be involved in advanced material studies performed throughout the section, such as giving support for examinations making use of non-destructive techniques (NDT) available in the section, but also in cooperation with other CERN services (follow-up of Residual Resistivity Ratio measurements), or external laboratories.

You will be involved and will be the first contact point in working groups of the above mentioned projects in order to provide them with material expertise on specific topics of material selection and qualification, and to systematically present material tests results. This will include providing support in writing and reviewing technical specifications and performing qualifications and audits related to procurement of materials and production of components.

Your profile

About us

At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world’s largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter – fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature. Find out more on http://home.cern.

We are on a Quest. A Journey into discovery like no other. Bring your expertise to our unique work and develop your knowledge and skills at pace. Join world-class subject matter experts on unique projects, in a Quest for greater knowledge and deeper understanding.

Begin your CERN Quest. Take Part!

Diversity has been an integral part of CERN’s mission since its foundation and is an established value of the Organization. Employing a diverse workforce is central to our success.
