Job Summary: As the Conservation Communications Manager, you will play a fundamental role in ensuring that MDF’s conservation message is delivered to all audiences.  The position will lead efforts to ensure proper documentation of all habitat projects and agreements for proper promotion and reporting. The main responsibilities will include working with the conservation staff to develop and manage conservation communication efforts and ensuring the proper tone and voice that aligns with MDF’s mission delivery, communications and marketing campaigns, fundraising efforts, and MDF organizational positions. Duties will include writing conservation pieces (articles, press releases, social posts, reports, etc.) that tell the conservation story, provide editorial support to our conservation staff, and overseeing editorial content for the MDF website on conservation. This role requires a deep passion for wildlife conservation, particularly for mule deer and black-tailed deer, and the ability to effectively communicate our mission to diverse audiences.

This position will be part of the marketing and communications team, supervised by the Senior Director of Marketing and Communications, with close coordination with the Chief Conservation Officer and the conservation team. Incumbent will be required to participated in both teams’ meetings and will work to coordinate between the two teams.

This position is a work-from-home position and requires reliable internet access and a dedicated workspace. Preference will be given to candidates who reside in the range or mule deer or black-tailed deer.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with conservation teams to provide the best voice for the MDF on conservation issues
  • Manage and distribute conservation communications to numerous different audiences in the appropriate format
  • Consult with executive management to develop effective conservation communication procedures and policies for various emergency situations or crises
  • Draft press releases and other written pieces for organizational news and highlights
  • Write letters, interdepartmental memos, and other business correspondence
  • Communicate with media outlets and journalists and create press kits
  • Develop materials to educate staff on conservation communication practices
  • Coach and assist team members on improving communication skills
  • Perform communications research and monitor the progress of various communications strategies
  • Oversee the mission focused content strategy and creation for the MDF website
  • Work with conservation staff to support project communications, documentation, and promotion
  • Work directly conservation leadership on federal, state, and other federal agreements requirements (reports, articles, social promotion, etc.)
  • Work directly with the MDF Digital Analysis Coordinator to ensure the conservation story is getting properly distributed
  • Provide copy editing and creative communications support to staff
  • Be a liaison to companies/consultants on the implementation of marketing/communications contracts associated USFS Keystone Agreements

Required Education, Skills, Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Marketing, Public Relations, or Natural Resource related communications.
  • 2 years’ experience in natural resource related communications, marketing, or public relations with a preference for sporting/hunting/conservation focus
  • Strong storytelling skills
  • Ability to work independently from a remote office location with regular travel
  • Ability to work in a team setting with remote employees
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities that can change regularly
  • Skills with MS Office 365 Suite including MS TEAMS and other networking software (Zoom, Dropbox, etc.)
