Mechanic – Wildlife Technician

The University of Florida Department of Wildlife Ecology and Conservation at the Fort Lauderdale Research and Education Center in Davie, Florida (The Croc Docs ) is seeking enthusiastic individuals to work with scientists from the University of Florida as well as scientists and managers from state and federal agencies. Candidate will be expected to work 40 hours a week, including nights and occasional weekends.

Position Description:

The University of Florida is seeking a skilled and motivated OPS Mechanic – Wildlife Technician to support the Croc Docs Wildlife Research Team. This position will primarily focus on management of a fleet of field vehicles and vessels. Duties include the maintenance, repair, and inventory of vehicles, airboats, boats, trailers, and research equipment (approximately 60% of duties), while also assisting with wildlife research as needed (approximately 40%). Mechanical & Equipment Duties (60%)

• Perform scheduled preventive maintenance and repairs on vehicles, trailers, airboats, boats, and outboard/inboard motors
• Diagnose and troubleshoot mechanical and electrical issues in marine and land-based equipment
• Maintain and repair boat systems including steering, lighting, fuel, electrical, and engine control systems
• Install and maintain radios, sirens, and other law enforcement or research-related electronic equipment
• Maintain accurate inventory records of tools, parts, and supplies; ensure proper documentation of repairs and maintenance activities
• Keep shop areas clean and safe; review technical manuals and stay current with equipment specifications
• Operate and maintain 4×4 vehicles, boats, and airboats

Wildlife Research & Field Support (40%)

• Assist biologists with wildlife surveys, including native crocodilian and invasive species research

Required Qualifications

• At least two years of experience in wildlife, fisheries, environmental science, agriculture, or mechanical repair
• Valid driver’s license and ability to operate 4WD vehicles, trailers, ATVs, and boats (12–26 feet)
• Demonstrated knowledge of vehicle or boat repair and maintenance techniques and methods
• Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and work in remote, rugged conditions in inclement weather
• Strong troubleshooting skills and ability to work independently or as part of a team
• Strong organizational and communication skills, ability to keep detailed records

Preferred Qualifications

• Familiarity with Florida’s native and non-native wildlife
• Previous experience overseeing fleet operations for vehicles or vessels

Duties

Primary duties include boat and vehicle maintenance, as well as conducting herpetofaunal surveys, radio-telemetry, live-trapping, and removal and necropsy of nonnative species.

Salary: Minimum starting salary $20.00/hr, Commensurate with experience
