JOB DESCRIPTION

Job Description

Your responsibilities

Are you a hands-on mechanical engineer with a passion for cutting-edge technology and precision assemblies? Then seize this opportunity and join CERN’s Experimental Physics (EP) Department, where you will take part in the development and construction of the next generation of particle detectors.

The CERN ATLAS Team plays a major role in the construction of the future silicon ATLAS Inner Tracker (ITk). In particular, the CERN team focuses on the development of the Pixel Outer Barrel (OB), including the design, prototyping and assembly of the support structures as well as the final detector integration and testing.

As a mechanical engineer in the CERN ATLAS Team, you will contribute to these activities, playing an active role in the assembly and quality control of the local supports. As part of your functions, you will be responsible for the development and implementation of suitable quality assurance procedures and test benches to verify the thermo-mechanical performance of the final assemblies. In addition, you will take part in the engineering of the precision tooling required for the assembly and installation of detector components, including both cell loading and cell integration.

Your profile

Skills and/or knowledge

  • Demonstrated experience in the design of precision mechanics components and systems. A good understanding of tracking detector mechanics and knowledge of composite materials would be advantageous.
  • Demonstrated experience in the use of CAD software for 3D modelling (ideally Catia V5) and the production of 2D technical drawings according to the relevant standards for dimensioning and tolerances (e.g. ISO Geometrical Product Specifications).
  • Demonstrated, hands-on experience in thermal and mechanical testing is essential. Knowledge of LabVIEW and hands-on experience in the operation of temperature forcing systems and/or CO2 cooling plants would be considered an asset.
  • Demonstrate a “can-do” attitude as well as willingness to participate first-hand in the assembly and testing of unique detector components.
  • Rigorous and organized approach to work, producing quality results at first attempt.
  • Work well in teams.
  • Fluent in English, the ability to work in French would be an advantage.

Eligibility criteria:

  • You are a national of a CERN Member or Associate Member State.
  • You have a professional background in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering (or a related field) and have either:
    • a Master’s degree with 2 to 6 years of post-graduation professional experience;
    • or a PhD with no more than 3 years of post-graduation professional experience.
  • You have never had a CERN fellow or graduate contract before.

About us

At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world’s largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter – fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature. Find out more on http://home.cern.

We are on a Quest. A Journey into discovery like no other. Bring your expertise to our unique work and develop your knowledge and skills at pace. Join world-class subject matter experts on unique projects, in a Quest for greater knowledge and deeper understanding.

Begin your CERN Quest. Take Part!

Diversity has been an integral part of CERN’s mission since its foundation and is an established value of the Organization. Employing a diverse workforce is central to our success.
