JOB DESCRIPTION

Job Description

Having entered its phase II in early 2021, the Future Circular Collider (FCC) study is capitalizing on the work of the Conceptual Design Report (CDR), issued in 2019, to refine its results regarding the architecture of the cryogenic systems of both FCC-ee (lepton) and -hh (Hadron) machines, aiming at issuing a Feasibility Report, which shall serve as input for the next ESPP (European Strategy for Particle Physics) Update in 2026/2027. Specifically, for the cryogenic system, it means taking into consideration all the updates transmitted by stakeholders and impacting its general architecture, regarding the general accelerator layout, the ongoing work on superconducting radio-frequency cavities (SRF) and the MDI (Machine Detectors Interface) components design for the -ee machine.

As a Mechanical Engineer, you will:

  • -Familiarised with the cryogenics associated with the FCC study phase 1 (the CDR);
  • Gradually take over the cryogenics modelling, and dynamic simulations verifying the behaviour and response of the foreseen cryogenic system to specifically chosen thermal transients and prepare a global status update;
  • Considering the recent modifications brought by the project to the accelerator layout, propose a refinement of the current cryogenic process, with a distinction between the accelerator, the experiments, and the machine-detector interfaces;
  • Assess the impact of these modifications on the integration of the cryogenic infrastructure;
  • Continue the parametric studies started on the design of specific components of the SRF cavities, the MDI, and the cryogenic distribution;
  • Refine the preliminary layout and implementation strategy for surface and underground cryogenic facilities;
  • Complete the Feasibility Study to issue the associated final report by the end of 2025.

Who we are looking for

Skills and/or knowledge

  • Python programming (cryogenic system design scripts);
  • Experience in process dynamic simulations would be considered an asset (cryogenic process behaviour modelling);
  • Fluent in English, the ability to work in French would be an advantage.

Eligibility criteria:

  • You are a national of a CERN Member or Associate Member State.
  • By the application deadline, you have a maximum of two years of professional experience since graduation in Mechanical Engineering (or a related field) and your highest educational qualification is either a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree.
  • You have never had a CERN fellow or graduate contract before.
  • Applicants without an university degree are not eligible.
  • Applicants with a PhD are not eligible.

Additional Information

What we offer

  • A monthly stipend ranging between 5134 and 5647 Swiss Francs (net of tax).
  • Coverage by CERN’s comprehensive health scheme (for yourself, your spouse and children), and membership of the CERN Pension Fund.
  • Depending on your individual circumstances: installation grant; family, child and infant allowances; payment of travel expenses at the beginning and end of contract.

About us

At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world’s largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter – fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature. Find out more on http://home.cern.

Diversity has been an integral part of CERN’s mission since its foundation and is an established value of the Organization. Employing a diverse workforce is central to our success.
