Mechanical Support Manager, Sri Lanka (Subject to Funding)

The starting salary package for this position is £54,356 GBP / approx. $68,730 USD including all allowances.

About MAG

MAG (Mines Advisory Group) is an international humanitarian organisation based in Manchester, UK, and working in 32 countries. We remove landmines and unexploded ordnance to release safe and productive land for communities, and work to reduce the threat of armed violence by supporting governments to safely manage weapons and ammunition. In 1997, MAG was a co-recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize for our work campaigning for the Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Convention.

About the role

The Mechanical Support Manager will be responsible for ensuring MAG Sri Lanka’s mechanical assets are managed and maintained in such a manner as to support operations in the most efficient and safe way possible. The key areas of responsibility will include:

  1. Ensuring effective and timely maintenance, servicing, and repair of MAG’s mechanical assets with associated spares.
  2. Providing technical expertise to develop existing mechanical management policies and procedures.
  3. Managing a team of national mechanical asset mechanics and delivering training to national staff to strengthen capacity to conduct maintenance, repairs, and the correct use of mechanical assets.
  4. Providing timely support to mechanized clearance teams, supporting the allocation of facilities and management of spare parts to ensure unbroken operations in line with contracted requirements.
  5. Support and oversee the smooth operation of a dedicated workshop facility including mobile workshop support vehicles.

The role can often be remote, working in challenging contexts away from home comforts, but the life-saving impact the work has on local communities is very real, and rewarding. This is a fantastic opportunity to be involved in MAG’s life-saving work on a day-to-day basis. The role is based mainly in Vavuniya with travel to the Eastern Areas and occasional visits to Colombo for parts procurement.

About you

The successful candidate will have experience in mechanical plant management well as have experience of maintaining and a wide range of mechanical assets; this includes diagnostics; welding (welding/arc welding specific, TIG and MIG welding desirable) and preventative maintenance. The successful candidate will also need to have experience managing and capacity building local staff and in designing and delivering training in the repair and maintenance of fleet and other machinery.

We are looking for a dynamic, pragmatic and flexible individual who has the ability to find creative solutions to issues that arise and experience of providing technical expertise to develop existing fleet management policies and procedures. Whilst experience in mine action is not required the post holder will ideally have experience of working in a developing country and an understanding of the constraints this imposes.

About the Sri Lanka Programme

MAG’s Sri Lanka programme addresses the problems faced by mine-affected communities by providing efficient, effective and safe clearance of land. The Sri Lankan civil war ended in 2009, but landmines and explosive remnants of war (ERW) continue to threaten communities in northern and eastern districts.  MAG uses a mixture of manual and mechanical teams to maximise the efficiency of the land release process in country. By making land safe and returning it to the affected communities, MAG is helping people in Sri Lanka to rebuild their lives, livelihoods and futures following the civil war. MAG Sri Lanka extended its programme activities by adding Weapons and Ammunition Management (WAM) activities to the programme in 2019.
