Purpose:
The Media and Communication Officer will position Women for Women International (WfWI) in media, storytelling and events to increase visibility and engagement. He/she will assist the Global Communications team in gathering and developing stories and content, including visual assets, to be shared through WfWI’s digital platforms as well as work within the CO to increase WfWI’s awareness in the CO.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Communication
- Assist in reviewing WfWI-Iraq external/internal communications to ensure adherence to brand guidelines
- Assist in collaborating across departments in the country office, frequently visiting training centers to gather and write stories supporting WfWI’s external communications.
- Assist in drafting press releases, speeches, and blogs using best practices in impact storytelling to advance WfWI’s brand and key messages.
- Strengthen and support internal communications as needed.
- Develop and submit well-written and properly investigated stories of WFWI programs across Iraq.
- Content development including visual assets collection
- Work closely with the GSC Brand and Integrated Communications Manager and Global Communications Coordinator to identify and collect program participants’ testimonials, photos, videos, and impact stories.
- Develop and submit well-written and properly investigated stories of program participants when needed by the Global Communications team.
- Monitor news and identify opportunities to position WfWI-Iraq on various issues.
- Support development of stories/testimonials related to Grants reporting.
- Take photographs and videos from program participants during story collection process, register local celebrations, as graduations and important days/events through photo and video and share these assets with the GSC team.
- Create an effective and up-to-date filing system for all visuals – videos, photos, and audios.
- Earned media and events: Local and international
- Identifies local, regional and international earned media opportunities to amplify WfWI’s share of voice
- Develops media pitches on a regular basis and submits to media outlets, developing contacts with reputable outlets and cultivating reporters and journalists.
- Works closely with WfWI’s Global Communications Coordinator to organize media interviews with CO media spokespersons as needed
- Prepares talking points for CO media spokespersons as needed.
- Supports execution of CO-level and global campaigns such as International Women’s Day, World Refugee Day, #SheDares etc.
- Identifies local external engagement opportunities for WfWI at the CO level.
- Social Media: Local
- Establish social media presence for WfWI-Iraq, in accordance with WfWI’s global brand
- Draft, create and schedule relevant social media copy, images, videos or digital graphics
- Create video content for and visual content for various social media platforms, including, but not limited to, Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter/X, with excellent judgment, instincts, and a sharp feel for the social media landscape. Content to produce includes video, a plethora of photography, gifs, short clips, streaming stories, etc.
- Develop ideas for our social platforms, posts, and campaigns while keeping abreast of external trends and developments, and competitor outputs.
- Source and create timely social media content to educate various audiences about key campaigns such as International Women’s Day, World Refugee and in support of Advocacy goals.
- Monitor audience interactions and engage with users across our social platforms
- Assist with monitoring news cycle and identifying trending topics in the media and online
- Track, measure, and compare social media performance metrics in monthly reports
- Support media relations and content creation for external events as needed
Qualifications & Preferred Skills
Skills and Qualifications:
- Minimum of 3 years work experience ideally in the INGO/NGO sector,
- Bachelor’s degree in communication studies
- Inspiring and motivational advocate for women’s empowerment a strong advantage.
- Excellent story writing and messaging development skills, including verbal communication skills in English
- Passionate about using storytelling techniques to champion women’s rights
- Expert level knowledge in photography and in collecting videos using smartphone or DSLR
- Experience managing and creating content on multiple social platforms
- Strong computer skills in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Email applications
- Experience working in conflict-affected and/or refugee contexts a strong advantage
- Excellent administrative and organizational skills.
- Strong interpersonal, communication and teambuilding skills.
- Ability to prioritize tasks and manage time efficiently.
