About the Role

GOAL is now seeking a dynamic, talented, and energetic candidate to take up the role of Media and Communications Manager to drive and deliver upon our ambitious communications objectives, strengthen GOAL’s positioning within the media, and support the overall strengthening of GOAL’s brand. This role would initially be offered on a 12-month fixed-term contract.

The role will sit within GOAL’s Communications Team and work cross-organisationally with stakeholders and colleagues across GOAL HQ. A key focus of the role will be to build GOAL’s profile, presence, and positioning across the media landscape in Ireland, ensuring GOAL is recognised as the leading Irish humanitarian agency delivering impactful and innovative programs around the world.

The Media and Communications Manager will also play a leading role in revitalising GOAL’s long held and distinctive sporting identity and links through smart, relevant media positioning, development of sports-centred partnerships and relationships, and engagement with well-known sports stars and ambassadors.

The right candidate will have at least five years’ experience in media, communications, sports industry, a PR agency environment, or similar related fields. Demonstrable experience building and leveraging strong relationships with national and local media outlets and publishers will be highly valued, as will experience in sports media and / or journalism.

Key Areas of Responsibility

Proactive Media Engagement

  • Develop a comprehensive national GOAL consumer/ fundraising and sports media relations strategy to increase GOAL’s visibility and impact in the Irish media.
  • Drive compelling content for consumer/ fundraising and sports related press materials to profile GOAL’s work and impact in the humanitarian sector for media outreach.
  • Develop and maintain a database of key national news platforms and media contacts (with a specific focus on consumer and sports journalists) and build relationships with them to drive GOAL’s voice and presence in the media.
  • Ensure content can be repurposed as appropriate for GOAL digital platforms to further promote GOAL’s work and impact across the world.
  • Monitor media trends and coverage, providing timely responses and advice on media opportunities and challenges.

Sports Brand Positioning

  • Re-establish and strengthen GOAL’s brand linkages with the sports community in Ireland through the development of strong and lasting partnerships with different representative organisations and groups within the Irish sports sectors and drive associated media coverage.
  • Engage with existing GOAL sports related ambassadors, patrons and champions to secure support and visibility for GOAL’s sports related fundraising initiatives (e.g. Jersey Day, GOAL Mile, Corporate Cycle, Golf Classic and more)
  • Support recruitment of more sports related ambassadors, patrons, and champions and promote GOAL as the sports stars charity of choice and manage and develop these relationships.
  • Coordinate media coverage to highlight the sports community’s support for GOAL, amplifying our message and reach.
  • Leverage sports events and platforms to promote GOAL’s mission, enhancing our brand’s association with sports values and community engagement.

Communications Project Management

  • Lead the development and execution of a wide range of communications projects, including content packages, reports, presentations, videos, and key fundraising/organisational events.
  • Manage timelines, budgets, and resources for communications projects, ensuring high-quality outcomes and alignment with GOAL’s objectives.
  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to ensure cohesive and impactful communications strategies and materials.

Management and Strategy

  • Provide leadership and management to direct report(s), ensuring effective team performance and professional development.
  • Optimize resource allocation and workflow within the communications team to maximize efficiency and impact.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of GOAL’s overall communications strategy, aligning team efforts with the organization’s vision and goals.
  • Foster a culture of innovation and excellence within the communications team, encouraging continuous improvement and strategic thinking.

The Person

  • Demonstrable experience of at least five years in communications, an agency environment, media relations, or a related field. Exposure to the charity sector or sports / sports marketing industry in Ireland considered a bonus.
  • Strong leadership skills and experience managing teams and projects.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication abilities, with knack for storytelling and engaging diverse audiences.
  • Demonstrated success in media engagement, brand positioning, and strategic communications planning.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, dynamic environment and navigate complex international landscapes.

A commitment to GOAL’s mission and values, with ideally an understanding of global humanitarian issues.

GOAL offers staff flexible working with our hybrid model, we require our HQ employees to work 2 days per week from our office in Dun Laoghaire, Dublin.
