The Opportunity – Media Manager (For Nationals Based in Gaza)

Post location: Gaza Area Office.

Contract Duration and Level of Effort: 12 months with possible extension.

ROLE PURPOSE:

The oPt Media Manager, will lead Save the Children’s media work in oPt and content gathering in Gaza, supporting Save the Children to deliver on its commitment to speak out for and with children living in the oPt. The role will work closely with the ACCM Director to ensure content and products are developed and disseminated in support of the Country Office’s advocacy and campaign priorities, including the CeasefireNOW campaign, humanitarian access, the detention of children, and accountability.

A key part of this role is to secure media coverage on the situation for children in oPt, ensuring media is an integral part of our response. Appropriate and strategic media engagement is pivotal for Save the Children’s advocacy and fundraising. The post-holder is expected to demonstrate initiative, generate ideas, proactively propose options that align with the CO’s strategic objectives for advocacy, spot strong news lines, draft quality media products, and strengthen the collection and dissemination of content for media and communications purposes. In coordination with the Regional Media Manager, the post-holder will act as a key focal point for all media requests on oPt from members and channel requests to appropriate spokespeople. S/he will also be a primary spokesperson for the CO and the primary spokesperson for interviews from the ground in Gaza. Fundamental to the job is the ability to gather, consolidate, analyse and share information in a way that is easily understood by news organisations, and other stakeholders.

The post-holder will be expected to work closely with relevant programme teams, as well as working closely with child safeguarding and child protection colleagues, ensure that all children involved in our media and communications work are protected from potential mental and physical harm, and potential repercussions from their involvement in our work. S/he will be expected to be able to work autonomously, proactively and accountably, demonstrating strong problem-solving skills, strategic judgement and risk sensitivity.

SCOPE OF ROLE:

Reports to: Advocacy, Campaigns, Communications and Media (ACCM) Director

Staff reporting to this post: One (Media and Communications Officer – Gaza)

KEY AREAS OF ACCOUNTABILITY:

Priority Deliverables

  • Ensure media products are of high quality and developed (with members where relevant) in support of the CO advocacy strategy.
  • Ensure children are meaningfully part of our media work and content gathering and all safeguarding and protection risks are considered and mitigated, working with programme teams, child safeguarding and child protection colleagues closely.
  • Ensure a media strategy is developed, including updating media messaging in line with updated policy language, working closely with the ACCM Director and communications colleagues.
  • Develop a speaking out plan and risk mitigation strategy, to ensure emergency preparedness in media and comms.

The post-holder will also work across business as usual deliverables for media within the oPt CO, including:

  • Main point of contact for media requests from Save the Children regional, global teams, and national outlets
  • Writing press releases
  • Delivering on key ‘media moments’ for the CO that bring together advocacy, campaigns, media, comms, and fundraising (where relevant)
  • Working with the Regional Media Manager and the Global Media Unit (GMU)
  • Supervising and gathering images from programme and response work
  • Ensuring Child Safeguarding processes in content gathering and media interviews are followed
  • Preparing key messages for Q&As
  • Contributing to crisis management by developing reactive and proactive comms and media strategies
  • Work with members and RO to coordinate and facilitate for news media field visits showcasing the work of Save the Children, while sensitive to the realities on the ground

The post-holder will also develop materials around report launches, and key activities/moments for the CO, and provide input into concept notes and proposals, including budget lines.

General:

  • Comply with Save the Children policies and practice with respect to child safeguarding, code of conduct, health and safety, equal opportunities and other relevant policies and procedures.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master’s degree in media, communication, or related field.

EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS

Essential:

  • Minimum of +5 years experience of humanitarian media work (experience from the occupied Palestinian territory or wider MENA region a plus)
  • Solid knowledge and use of media and multimedia platforms
  • Photography and video production, including post-production platforms (Adobe creative suite)
  • Evidence of excellent verbal and written communication skills for a wide range of different audiences including donors, journalists and the ‘general public’.
  • Experience delivering media and communications assets across multiple channels, including print, social, and digital
  • Experience of effective spokes-personing across a range of media
  • Strong drafting skills for media products, with significant experience of creating quality press releases, Q&As
  • Excellent relationship building skills, in particular to support media work and content gathering with under pressure programmes and partners during emergency responses
  • An initiative-taking, proactive, inspiring attitude with the ability to manage and prioritise an unpredictable workload and solve problems quickly with limited support
  • Ability to deliver high-quality photographs and case studies from affected communities
  • Experience of delivering training, presentations and other capacity building activities to varied audiences, ideally within a country programme
  • Strong influencing skills
  • Politically and culturally sensitive with qualities of patience, tact and diplomacy
  • The capacity and willingness to be flexible and accommodating in difficult and sometimes insecure working circumstances
  • Commitment to the aims and principles of Save the Children
  • Experience working sensitively with vulnerable groups

Desirable

  • Experience working in or on the occupied Palestinian territory
  • Written and spoken proficiency in English
  • Experience working in a member/affiliate-based international organisation a plus
  • Experience or knowledge of working and living in relevant regions/contexts
  • Knowledge of key humanitarian and child rights issues and debates
  • Familiarity with editing software such as Adobe Creative Suite
