Media Relations and Communications Manager
Communications and External relations (CER) department
As part of a dynamic team, the Media Relations and Communications Manager will play a crucial role in shaping and executing communication strategies that enhance the institute’s visibility and reputation. The successful candidate will work closely with senior executives and engage with a diverse range of stakeholders to communicate the institute’s achievements, research findings, and strategic initiatives. The incumbent will have the opportunity to make a significant impact on the reputation of IIASA and stakeholder relationships. Additionally, the ability to effectively manage and mentor a team will be integral to ensuring the successful implementation of communication campaigns and projects. Strategic thinking, creativity, and strong communication skills will be essential in driving the institute’s communication efforts and achieving its organizational goals.
main tasks and responsibilities
- Responsible for developing and implementing comprehensive communication strategies with the institute’s major stakeholders, including the IIASA network of national and regional member organizations, intergovernmental organizations and other international partners.
- Develop and implement comprehensive media relations strategies to amplify the institute’s visibility in national and international media, and build positive public relations, enhance knowledge about the institute, ensuring consistency in messaging across all communication channels.
- Cultivate and maintain strong relationships with journalists, editors, and key media outlets; leverage own networks to identify media opportunities, pitch stories, arrange interviews, and effectively address media inquiries.
- Create and distribute compelling and accurate content across diverse communication channels to convey the institute’s research findings, events, and initiatives. Collaborate closely with internal teams to produce engaging multimedia content, such as videos, infographics, and presentations.
- Foster and manage relationships with national and regional member organizations to communicate the work of IIASA and explore innovative channels for engagement.
- Coordinate and oversee press conferences, media interviews, and other events to promote the institute’s work.
- Monitor media coverage, identify potential opportunities and risks, and deliver regular reports for senior leadership and member organizations.
- Directly reports to the Head of Communications and External Relations while leading a team of communication professionals; provide guidance, mentorship, and support to team members, fostering their professional growth and development.
- Develop and implement internal communication strategies to keep employees informed, engaged, and aligned with IIASA objectives.
- In line with the team spirit that prevails at IIASA, the incumbent may occasionally work on other tasks assigned by their superiors, that might not be directly related to this appointment but where the post holder has relevant experience and skills, and/or a shortage of immediate personnel capabilities requires such.
qualifications, experience, and requirements
- Advanced academic qualification (master’s degree or equivalent) in communications, public relations, journalism, or a related field.
- Proven track record of successfully developing and executing international communication strategies and media relations campaigns, preferably in an international organization, media outlet, scientific or research-focused entity.
- Demonstrated capability to leverage and expand a strong media network, along with established relationships with international journalists and influencers.
- Proven track record of effective media outreach and securing positive coverage.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills in English, with the ability to effectively convey complex information to diverse audiences; proficiency in additional languages, notably German, desirable.
- Outstanding interpersonal and networking skills, adept at cultivating and maintaining relationships with key stakeholders.
- Extensive experience managing communication campaigns and projects from inception to completion.
- Exceptional team management skills with demonstrated ability to mentor and motivate team members.
- Proactive and collaborative mindset, capable of thriving in a fast-paced and dynamic team environment.
- Willingness and flexibility to travel on occasion.
appointment terms
Candidates should be available to take up the position as soon as possible in 2024 (start date negotiable). We offer an initial fixed-term, full-time employment contract for one year, with the intention to extend to an open- ended contract thereafter.
Duties will be carried out at the IIASA premises in Laxenburg, near Vienna in Austria.
We offer
- An attractive salary which is exempt from income tax in Austria and negotiable, based on the qualifications, skills and experience of the selected individual and at least EUR 60,000.00 gross per annum (subject to deductions for health insurance and/or social security).
IIASA salaries are:
- Not directly comparable with other employers in Austria, due to the unique legal status and privileges granted to IIASA.
- Subject to the principle of income aggregation (Progressionsvorbehalt in German).
