Job Summary

Key Responsibilities:

Clinical Responsibilities:

  • Validate and document patient-reported information.
  • Obtain, report, and document vital signs.
  • Perform routine clinical functions like vital signs, pain screening, and chief complaint documentation.
  • Document interpreter use and facilitate interpreter participation for medical appointments.
  • Assist with medication reconciliation and update patient medication lists.
  • Assist Nurses and Providers in preparing for exams and procedures.
  • Perform sterile processing procedures in the outpatient clinic.
  • Assist in complex medical procedures as trained and required.
  • Act as a chaperone for medical providers.
  • Transport patients safely and monitor clinic patient flow.
  • Obtain specimens and perform Point of Care Testing and EKGs.
  • Participate in updating mandatory logs and complete referrals as ordered.
  • Obtain medication authorizations from insurers.
  • Perform clinical activities accurately and in a timely manner.

Compliance and Safety:

  • Comply with infection control, safety, and clinical practice policies.
  • Ensure locked medication cabinets and adherence to JCAHO/Title 22 standards.
  • Complete annual competency testing.

Team Collaboration and Communication:

  • Collaborate with the practice team for patient care coordination.
  • Maintain professional communication standards and uphold working environment standards.
  • Notify providers of patient delays and communicate delays to the front office.
  • Share relevant information with the healthcare team.
  • Identify and communicate problems for resolution to supervisors.
  • Offer suggestions for clinic/practice improvement.

Electronic Health Record (EHR) Utilization:

  • Use Electronic Health Record (APEX) for documentation within the scope of practice.
  • Document vital signs, patient history, medications, allergies, etc.
  • Order, document, and schedule tests, procedures, and medications.

Operations Maintenance and Miscellaneous:

  • Maintain clean, well-stocked exam rooms, hubs, and labs.
  • Review lab results, obtain insurance authorizations, and schedule complex procedures.
  • Coordinate Hospital Assistant lunches and ensure clinic coverage.
  • Adhere to infection control and equipment cleanliness protocols.
  • Participate in Quality Improvement and Customer Service initiatives.

The hourly compensation range for this role is 

$31.90 – $39.82

. An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate, position requirements, AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.

For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.

Department Description

UCSF’s Temporary Employment Program (TEP) recruits and hires temporary employees for immediate clerical and technical support services to UCSF Departments and various off-campus locations. UCSF departments deploy temporary employees to work on special projects, fill in for regular employees who are on vacation or leave, or to temporarily fill a vacant position during recruitment. Frequently temporary employees become successful candidates for career and limited appointment positions.

Required Qualifications

  • Certification from an approved Medical Assistant program; or equivalent combination of training and experience. 
  • Knowledge and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both directly and over the phone.
  • Able to meet physical requirements.
  • This position requires flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Health locations.

Preferred Qualifications

  • One year’s experience as a Hospital Assistant in a medical practice.
  • Experience with insurance verification, medical record data abstraction, medical assisting, or patient financial services strongly preferred. 
  • Degree from accredited medical assisting school. 
  • Bi-lingual or multi-lingual capability (Spanish, Cantonese, Russian) strongly preferred.
  • Current State of California Phlebotomy Certification (CPT1)

License/Certification

  • Current American Heart Association CPR Certification
