Organizational context
The UN Clinic medical laboratory Technologist assistant performs His/her functions under the direct supervision of the Medical Physician In-Charge of the UN dispensary. The UN Clinics operate under the general supervision of UNDP on regards of all administrative matters. The technical supervision of the physician and the medical personnel in the field and the performance evaluation will be executed by the UN Medical Director or his nominee. In order to ensure that UNDP should granted access to MSD for its performance appraisal report.
Clinical Duties
Under the overall supervision of the UN Clinic Health Manager or his/her nominee within delegated authority, the Medical Laboratory Technologist assistant will be responsible for the following duties:
- Attend to the UN Clinic laboratory to ensure smooth operation of the day-to-day functions.
- Performs all laboratory tests (including hematology, chemical pathology and microbiology tests) as requested by the UN Clinic Physician in a promptly and professional matter and report in a timely fashion, results of such tests to the Physician only.
- Ensure appropriate disposal of the hazardous material following international standards of bio safety in coordination with the Medical Doctors and Nurse.
- Draws blood samples applying international sterilization and bio safety standards.
- Collects and labels relevant test samples for different tests following international bio safety standards.
- Ensure safe handling and safe disposal of all waste bio-hazardous materials in compliance with the international standards and practices.
- Autoclave and sterilize the instruments and containers following international standard of bio safety.
Medical Administrative duties
- Recommend procurement of laboratory supplies and equipment and ensure that inventory is kept updated.
- Plan for conducting external laboratory tests for UN staff when required.
- Keep records of all work done in the laboratory and provide statistical report regarding laboratory activities.
- Ensure that the laboratory test reports are managed in timely, promptly, and confidential manner.
- Ensure regular maintenance of all laboratory equipment following the technical specifications of the manufacturers of the equipment.
Supervisory administration
- As delegated by the UN Clinic Physician/Health manager, ensure that the hygienists/cleaners adhere to international best practices in disposal of biohazard waste in the laboratory.
- Responsible for regular reporting on laboratory activities, medical laboratory facilities available locally and other statistical information as may be required.
Involvement in UN Cares activities
- Assist in organization and implementation of health promotion/monitoring programmes.
- Involvement in the conduction of HIV/AIDS information campaign.
- Involvement in the provision of HIV/AIDS pretest counseling for clients in the UN Clinic laboratory.
Impact of Results
The incumbent analyzes and produces laboratory results with maximum precision leading to reliable results. This will assist in timely diagnosis of ailments.
The key results have an impact on the efficiency of the UN dispensary. Accurate, safe, cost effective and timely execution of the fully documented results strengthens the capacity of the UN Clinic at the duty station, and facilitates subsequent action by the supervisor.

Required Skills and Experience
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree or Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology and Secondary education is required.
Experience
- 5 years of experience as a laboratory technician is required.
- Proficiency in carrying out hematology, chemical pathology and microbiology tests is required.
- Experience in the usage of computers and office.
- software packages (MS Word, Excel, etc.) is required.
- Work experience in the United Nations or other international organization is an added advantage.
Language:
- Fluency in oral and written English is required.
- Knowledge of Somali language is desirable.
