Qualifications
OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME
The primary goal of the AFRO Medical Service is to ensure the well-being and health of WHO AFRO personnel and visitors. This comprehensive program aims to provide occupational health and safety support, emergency medical and nursing care, medical evacuations, when necessary, health promotion initiatives, diligent disease surveillance and reporting, and the establishment of collaborative partnerships with external healthcare providers. This program’s immediate unit and field activities are tailored to deliver on these objectives, collectively contributing to a safe, healthy, and resilient WHO AFRO community.
DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES
Under the direct guidance and supervision of the Regional Staff Physician and under the general guidance of the Director of staff Health and wellbeing, the incumbent will perform the following duties:
Clinical Care:
a) Providing comprehensive medical care and treatment to patients, following established medical protocols and guidelines for WHO staff members and dependents living and discussing disputed files with UN physicians via email or telephone to resolve issues
b) Conduct thorough medical assessments, diagnoses, and treatment plans for various health conditions.
c) Manage and follow up on patients with chronic illnesses and provide necessary interventions.
d) Respond to medical emergency call-outs and assist the Regional Staff Physician in providing adequate care and coordinating with emergency services as necessary.
e) Provide treatment for WHO AFRO workforce and their families; take emergency action and maintain a close liaison with the appropriate local health services in case staff members or dependents are hospitalized;
f) Assist staff in undergoing entry and periodic medical examinations, requesting supplementary records, vaccinations, or other necessary information when required.
g) Assess, monitor, and forward medical documents to headquarters for patients requiring international medical evacuation.
h) Maintains the confidential medical files of all staff members in the African Region;
i) Ensured the use of the PREVENTIEL software in order to produce reliable statistics for HMS/AFRO
j) Conduct health workshops, seminars, and training sessions on topics such as disease prevention, and First Aid.
k) Refer staff and their dependents for outpatient consultations outside the Regional Office and monitor those hospitalized in local health facilities.
l) Perform other related duties as assigned.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Education
Essential: Doctor of Medicine degree from a recognized institution.
Current unrestricted registration and license to practice medicine in the home country.
Desirable: Postgraduate training in Occupational Medicine, such as; family medicine or internal medicine, emergency medicine, or public health. Current BLS and ACLS Certification.
Experience
Essential: At least 5 years of combined experience in healthcare in a national and multinational organization.
Desirable: Experience in occupational health. Sufficient recent clinical experience in coordinating Medical Evacuations, in the outbreak and epidemic response in developing countries and supporting humanitarian emergency response field operations in conflict and resource-limited settings.

REMUNERATION
WHO offers staff in the General Services category an attractive remuneration package, which for the above position includes an annual net base salary starting at XAF 24,513,000 (subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance, as applicable) and 30 days of annual leave.
