The opportunity

As a Medical Scientist in our collaborative workforce, you’ll be working closely with a Grade 2 Medical Scientist and Section Leader to analyse clinical cases through cutting-edge cytogenetic and genomic assays.

Your responsibilities span the entire spectrum of the testing process, from specimen reception and sample processing to meticulous analysis, curation, report generation, LIMS integration, regulatory compliance, and robust quality management. The heart of your role lies in the generation of cytogenetic data, encompassing G-banded chromosomes, FISH, microarray techniques, and the meticulous collection of evidence used to derive interpretative clinical reports. Your efficiency in managing workloads ensures optimal quality, including timely Turnaround Times (TATs), and adherence to performance standards that set the bar high in our industry.

Beyond your core responsibilities, you may find yourself involved in training staff or trainees, sharing your expertise, and troubleshoot methods or equipment. At VCGS, we believe in fostering growth, knowledge exchange, and continuous improvement.

This role is offered a 12 month parental leave cover contract.

Your responsibilities include:

  • Perform test procedures, data analysis, report writing as directed e.g. G-banded karyotyping, FISH and/ or SNP microarray for a variety of sample types
  • Maintain proficiency in all genetic and genomic assays and procedures relevant to current work
  • Monitor the performance and operation of laboratory equipment
  • Ensure consumers are able to exercise their rights and responsibilities e.g. adherence to MCRI Privacy policies / proper records kept to track samples
  • Be responsive to patient and family complaints and concerns

About you

  • Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Applied Science and/or Honours
  • A minimum of 36 months of full time employment in an IANZ/NATA accredited cytogenetics laboratory, or in any other laboratory with a demonstrable focus on clinically relevant genetics/genomics research
  • Demonstrable ability to quickly learn and apply new concepts and knowledge
  • Demonstrable high level of technical competency in cytogenetic technologies
  • Demonstrable experience and competence in the performance and understanding of a wide range of diagnostic tests or procedures
