JOB DESCRIPTION: MEMBERSHIP ENGAGEMENT MANAGER

The Ohio Environmental Council seeks a full­-time Membership Engagement Manager. This role will lead efforts to ensure the Ohio Environmental Council Collective’s members feel connected to our movement and are equipped to impact the climate issues they care about most. This role will elevate robust cultivation and stewardship programs across the low and mid dollar donor segments across Ohio that deepen engagement, increase donation size, and build civic engagement. 

The Manager will develop and manage a membership giving program of current donors and prospects via a multi-faceted approach to member relationship-building that includes personalized outreach, events, direct mail, and digital engagement. This role will also ensure strong data management, provide support for major donor moves management, and lead other membership activities. Together these activities secure the support needed to advance critical climate change initiatives and broaden our movement in Ohio. 

Job Responsibilities

The Membership Engagement Manager will help develop and execute goals within the organization’s development plan. Reporting to the Managing Director of Individual Giving, and collaborating with the Communications team, they are responsible for the following:

  • Retain and grow the OEC Collective’s membership base by deeply engaging members and followers through in-person and digital meetings and events, phone banking, and additional stewardship strategies
  • Manage strategy and oversee execution of digital and direct mail fundraising and stewardship communications, working with Communications to develop and execute on content delivery
  • Manage and strategically grow the monthly sustainer program
  • Execute fundraising events across the state of Ohio
  • Conduct membership drive campaigns, lead fundraising point-of-entry events, and build on efforts to convert action-takers into members
  • Advance opportunities to educate and encourage civic engagement of current and prospective members, and re-engage lapsed members
  • Implement place-based engagement strategies at the low- and mid-dollar levels to deepen investment and grow connection
  • Execute strategic fundraising campaigns to maximize opportunities like the new strategic plan, Giving Tuesday, Earth Day, Green Gala, Law Conference, Annual Meeting, and urgent issue-based opportunities
  • Execute unique acquisition strategies across all giving segments to remedy donor attrition and grow and diversify our donor base
  • Ensure proper database management and hygiene, build queries, generate reports, support data strategy and analysis, and own data entry
  • Utilize data to lead donor research efforts in order to qualify donors for advancement into the mid and major donor programs 
  • Track, evaluate, and analyze outcomes of membership programs and plans, to inform strategies to achieve revenue goals within the membership audience
  • Support and play an active role in the development team’s efforts to integrate diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) into fundraising and embody the principles of Community-Centric Fundraising 
  • Assist in developing fundraising goals, budgets, metrics, and work plans
  • Other duties as assigned

Performance Expectations 

As a member of the Advancement Team, this position fundraises and grows our base of supporters year over year.

The Membership Engagement Manager must: 

  • Demonstrate knowledge of best practices to improve donor retention, acquisition and increase average gift amounts 
  • Apply excellent verbal and written communication, including strong attention to detail 
  • Demonstrate strategic, analytical, project management, and problem-solving skills, including the ability to anticipate job-related needs and issues
  • Demonstrate initiative and work as a proactive team player. Approach new ideas with a sense of possibility.

Qualifications

Required: 

  • 3-5 years of experience making direct fundraising asks
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills
  • Excellent project management skills
  • Event planning and execution experience
  • 2-3 years of experience with data management and analysis
  • Working knowledge of fundraising CRM tools, such as Salsa or EveryAction
  • Experience in a nonprofit development office
  • Ability to travel throughout Ohio and occasionally work evening and weekend hours

Desired:

  • Strong writing abilities
  • Experience using Canva and Adobe Creative Suite products (InDesign, Photoshop, etc.) to design both printed and digital materials
  • Involvement with advocacy organizations
  • Belief that our mission matters and that the protection of Ohio’s environment and democracy should be a priority among decision-makers

Compensation & Location

The salary range for this position is $50,000-$54,000. Salary depends on experience and is competitive. Excellent benefits include health, vision, dental, and life insurance, flexible and dependent care spending accounts, generous paid time off, and employer-matched retirement fund. This position is union eligible and in the collective bargaining unit for OEC Workers United.

The OEC’s headquarters is in Columbus, with a satellite office in Cleveland. The location of this position has strong preference for a Columbus area resident.
