Technical expertise on mercury waste management is provided to the Unit’s projects, activities and the Secretariat of the Global Mercury Partnership, resulting in high quality outputs that overall contribute to increasing knowledge and communication towards the reduction of mercury pollution in the context of the undertaken activities.

Duties and Responsibilities
The Knowledge and Risk Unit requires the services of a consultant to support work on mercury waste management, treatment and disposal in sectors including medical devices, mercury added products, and mining. The consultant will work closely with the UNEP Global Mercury Partnership in the delivery of services and outputs. The consultant will be responsible for developing a set of outputs related to targeted technical assistance on mercury waste management, and control of mercury pollution in mining. 1. In relation to dental amalgam workstream, the consultant will: • Liaise with WHO and project countries to support the documentation of installation of dental amalgam separators and the collection, storage and disposal of mercury-containing dental waste. • Liaise with relevant stakeholders, including the private sector to support the documentation of the shipment, treatment and disposal of mercury-containing dental waste. • Produce a summary and lessons learned document on the results of the waste management activities in the GEF-funded dental amalgam project. 2. In relation to mercury containing medical devices workstream, the consultant will: • Review the existing information, hold consultations with participating countries and subject experts related to waste management of the mercury containing medical devices and provide expertise for the waste managers trainings. • Design criteria for selecting pilot activities for collection and treatment of mercury-containing medical-devices in the context of the GEF-funded project on the same topic, in consultation with the WHO, project countries, and members of the Global Mercury Partnership. 3. In relation to the primary mercury mining workstream, the consultant will: • Provide expertise in identifying actions for mercury waste management, measurements of releases and site assessments for remediation at contaminated mining sites. 4. Though other cross-cutting activities the consultant will also: • Compile relevant information, in collaboration with the Global Mercury Partnership, into fact sheets and summary documents on the management of different types of mercury-containing waste. • Support Global Mercury Partnership Secretariat and the relevant areas of the Partnership in organizing webinars, analyzing and disseminating information, and curating knowledge. • Participate in other relevant project tasks, meetings and consultations.
Qualifications/special skills
Master’s degree or equivalent in a field related to environment/natural sciences or environmental engineering. A first-level university degree in combination with qualifying’ experience (2 additional years) may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree. • At least 5 years of experience in a field related to international chemicals and waste management is required. • Experience working in the area of mercury in products, in process or in waste management is required. • Demonstrated strong analytical, research and drafting skills, as well as ability to tailor language and styles to relevant audiences, including policy makers and the private sector is required. • Knowledge of the Minamata Convention and other waste related MEAs is desirable
Languages
Fluency in written and spoken English is required. Knowledge of French or Spanish is an advantage.
