Duties and Responsibilities
This position is located in the Medical Unit of the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO), Laayoune. The National IC Nurse reports to the MINURSO Chief Medical Officer. Within delegated authority, the National IC Nurse will be responsible for the following duties: • Attend the day-to-day activities at the clinic on a full-time basis and go on-call 24/7 when required. • Respond to emergency calls and assist the Medical Officers in providing medical care. • Perform diagnostic and screening tests such as: ECG, draws blood for laboratory tests and other samples as required. • Maintain and organize the medical clinic for any emergency, identify and plan for clinics’ required consumables, supplies and equipment requirements, and raise lists accordingly. • Assess the needs of clients visiting the clinic, ensuring good bedside manners, provide care/advice accordingly, and facilitate referral to the UN Medical Officer or to an outside physician, as indicated. • Enter medical information of patients into the patient’s file in the medical database with due respect for confidentiality. • Assist in providing health education and participate in addressing work environment, occupational health and other specific health issues. • Maintains medical inventory and supplies and distributes medical supplies to outstations. • Assist in the pharmacy, arrangement of the drugs and medical supplies including inventory, monthly consumptions, expired drugs. • Assist/escort patients on medical evacuation and provide emergency care when required; arrange and prepare the body of the deceased prior to repatriation of the dead body. • Review the immunization status of personnel, provide advice and administer vaccinations as directed by the Medical Officers. • Assist the CMO in preparing the budget and procuring medications and consumables. • Assist the CMO in all administrative tasks. • Performs other duties as and when required.
Qualifications/special skills
A high school diploma or equivalent is required A formal education/training in nursing, such as a registered professional nurse designation or equivalent, is required. A minimum of five (5) years of progressive clinical experience in the medical field and practice with nursing activities in hospitals is required. Experience with medical facilities in an international setting is desirable. Certificates in CPR or Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) or equivalent emergency medical care is an asset.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the positions advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required. Working knowledge of French and/or Arabic is desirable.
