Offer Description
Whether to improve air quality, reduce the health impact of fine particles or better understand their contribution to global warming, it is necessary to improve the quantification of particulate emissions and the assessment of their radiative properties. In-situ optical techniques are the only ones that can be used in complex environments or on large scales. In this respect, LIDAR techniques are of particular interest in this project for probing particulate emissions from aircraft engines. However, these particles have a complex morphology and variable composition, necessitating the use of models that are either too simplistic (Mie theory is not adapted to such complex morphologies) or too cumbersome (rigorous numerical resolution of Maxwell’s equations).
In this context, the aim of this thesis project is to improve the modeling of absorption, total and backscatter cross-sections of soot/black carbon aggregates in the purpose of their implementation in LIDAR signal inversion codes. To achieve this, rigorous cross-section calculations will be performed numerically using virtual aggregates with realistic morphologies. A detailed morphological analysis combined with a study of the internal electric field will be carried out to better evaluate these effective cross-sections. This modeling of the radiative properties of these particles will be used to interpret the results of measurement campaigns in which the PhD student will participate.
