GENERAL SUMMARY

Works under the supervision of a Nurse Manager. The Monitor Tech/Clinical Assistant’s primary job function is to perform general duties for the department, supports each strategic value by providing excellent care to those we serve The Clinical Assistant/Monitor Tech may perform a variety of basic patient care activities in caring for the personal needs and comfort of patients. Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

High School Diploma or successful completion of an equivalent High School Exam Required

Clerical vocational training preferred

Successfully completes SOMC Arrhythmia competency upon hire

Licensure:

BLS within 90 days of hire required

Experience:

Previous secretarial experience preferred.

Interpersonal Skills:

Ability to communicate effectively required

Interpersonal skills necessary in communicating effectively with public, patients and co-workers.

Essential Technical/Motor Skills:

Ability to use hands for repetitive simple grasping and fine manipulation for typing, answering the phone, copying, and use of other office equipment.

Ability to use computers and computer systems to enter data or process information required.

Hand/eye coordination to perform basic patient care activities

Essential Physical Requirements:

The physical demand is heavy. Occasionally lifts in excess of 100 pounds frequently lift 50 -100 pounds when transferring and position patients.

Stands and/or walks one to four hours per shift when filing, photocopying, and running errands. Sit for five to ten hours per shift with regular breaks when performing relevant clerical duties.

Occasional bending, squatting, reaching.

Ability to use hands for repetitive simple grasping, fine manipulation, and pushing/or pulling when attending to a patient’s physical needs, operating patient equipment and assisting with personal hygiene.

Essential Mental Requirements:

Analytical ability necessary to gather/correlate data for reports (if required).

Direct calls and customers to appropriate persons, and deal with upset customers.

Must also frequently cope with deadlines under pressure.

Essential Sensory Requirements:

Ability to see, hear, and speak clearly are required.

Good vision is required when performing job duties such as taking patient’s temperature and weight, feeding, ambulating patients, and observing patients.

Exposure to Hazards:

Normal patient care environment with occasional exposure to dust and odors.

Frequently exposed to noise due to job requirements.

Occasional exposure to body fluids, unpleasant patient care activities, infectious diseases and toxic substances.

Sharp instruments and moving machinery are occasionally used in attending to patient needs.

JOB SPECIFIC DUTIES AND PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS

  • Monitors cardiac rhythm by means of telemetry and/or hardware.
  • Interprets and identifies rhythms.
  • Reports variances and life threatening arrhythmias to appropriate nurse.
  • Assists with applying telemetry and replacing batteries on telemetry patients.
  • Welcomes and greets those coming on the unit.
  • Enters and updates Vocera staff assignment.
  • Serves as a resource for others in using CPOE.
  • Assists with data entry/order entry as needed.
  • Functions as a communications source for the nursing unit.
  • Assists with maintaining department correspondence.
  • Gathers and distributes department mail as needed.
  • Answers, screens, and refers incoming calls and visitors, and responds to general inquiries and proper documentation.
  • Assists with ordering/stocking of department office supplies.
  • Prepares various reports as required.
  • Assists with maintaining department related records, files, and manuals; handling significant volumes of confidential data.
  • Copies various reports and records.
  • Maintains patient environment and performs routine cleaning tasks in nursing unit/patient rooms.
  • Observes patients and reports unusual conditions and/or reactions to the nurse.
  • Assists with admissions, discharge, and transfer of patients.
  • Answers call lights and responds to patient needs.
  • Documents according to policy.

Schedules patient follow-up appointments as needed. * Monitors patient movement by means of a camera and a panel of monitors

  • Reports patient movement and attempts to fall.
  • Assists with rounding on difficult patients or providing 1:1 care for suicidal or difficult to manage patients
  • Enters and updates patient data and guardrails into the Care View system promptly
  • Reports alarms to appropriate staff member
  • Responds to patients in need through the Care View Monitoring System.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
