Monitoring Officer (Severn & Avon Vale Curlew Project)

Our Conservation Evidence Department is looking for a Monitoring Officer to support the Severn
& Avon Vales Curlew Project. The project aims to monitor and determine the breeding success
of a population of Eurasian Curlew, along with testing interventions to aid their recovery. The
role will involve working with the Research Officer, Senior Research Officer and Farmer Liaison
Officer and liaising with project teams (internally).

Role Outline

This role will be responsible for working closely with the Research Officer for implementing a
monitoring programme for Curlew. This will require identifying individuals and territories,
finding nests and leading on collecting, processing and safely storing nest camera and data
logger data. You will also assist with the radio tracking of Curlew chicks, ringing and
following their progress to fledging.

About You

To join the Severn & Avon Vales Curlew project team as our Monitoring Officer you’ll

  • have a degree in a biological subject or equivalent expertise
  • bring skills and experience of ornithological fieldwork, such as nest-finding and wildlife
    telemetry, ideally on wading birds.
  • demonstrate experience of rigorous data collection and storage in both a field and office
    setting
  • have the ability to conduct fieldwork independently using creativity to develop practical
    solutions when required and be happy to work in potentially challenging conditions.

There will be frequent travel to field sites not all of which are accessible by public
transport so a driving licence is essential.
