Status: Full time/ Reports to: Vice President of Western Conservation / Location: Remote in Western Montana or, preferably, working from TRCP’s Missoula Office if located within commuting distance/ Salary $68-71K DOE 

Founded in 2002, the Theodore Roosevelt Conservation Partnership (TRCP) is a national 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that works with 60+ partner groups, its Corporate Council and its 140,000 members and supporters to guarantee all Americans quality places to hunt and fish. We unite and amplify our partners’ voices by strengthening policy and funding around conservation, habitat, and access.

The TRCP’s Montana Field Representative works within the state of Montana to advance TRCP’s mission to guarantee all Americans quality places to hunt and fish. This individual collaborates closely with partner organizations, community leaders, and decision makers to further TRCP’s policy priorities in the state, including expanding access on public lands; conserving migration corridors, crucial habitats, special places, and backcountry public lands; and supporting state and federal programs that enhance public access and habitat conservation. Working as a member of the Center for Public Lands field team, this individual works closely with the Vice President of Western Conservation and field representatives from other Western states to further the conservation mission of the organization and to foster knowledge transfer.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Serve as the organization’s representative within the state of Montana on conservation and access policies affecting hunters and anglers.
  • Work cooperatively with hunting and angling organizations to build and advance a unified voice for the conservation of our fish and wildlife resources and outdoor heritage.
  • Organize support for conservation priorities from decision-makers in Montana, including county commissioners, mayors, members of Congress, the Governor, and other influential actors.
  • Work directly with state, tribal, and federal agency staff to provide recommendations and solicit feedback.
  • Engage grassroots hunters and anglers and work cooperatively with organized sporting groups to lead conservation campaigns on BLM, national forest lands, and wildlife refuges to conserve migration corridors and intact habitats, support wildlife highway crossings, balance energy development, and enhance public access.
  • Build and deliver coalition-driven policy recommendations to decision makers from the sporting, conservation, and business communities.
  • Create and distribute state-specific education materials that highlight the social, economic, and biological benefits of public lands within Montana.
  • When possible, serve on relevant federal, state, or local advisory groups/commissions/boards.
  • Work with the TRCP’s communications staff to generate strategically appropriate press coverage and to communicate with our members and the public electronically.
  • Work with the VP of Western Conservation and Director of Development to ensure financial support for the Center and its activities, including tracking of grant deliverables and the development of grant reports.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements:

  • A bachelor’s degree in a relevant field and 2+ years of experience in natural resource issues.
  • Detailed knowledge of public lands, and an appreciation for the landscapes and values of the West and Montana.
  • A passion for fish and wildlife and an interest in hunting and/or fishing.
  • Ability to build & maintain strong working relationships with a diverse group of stakeholders and partners.
  • Strong communications and writing skills.
  • Ability to work independently and coordinate multiple priorities within a diverse project and policy portfolio.
  • Willingness and ability to travel across the state/ valid Driver’s License
  • Strong initiative, enthusiasm, and willingness to pitch in whenever needed.

An ideal candidate will have established relationships within Montana and understand how to effectively influence conservation policy.
