The Department of Ecology at Montana State University is seeking field technicians for 2026 to assist with high-profile data collection on blue ribbon trout streams (i.e., Big Hole, Beaverhead, Ruby, Madison, Yellowstone rivers) in southwest Montana. Successful candidates will assist with recreational use data collection that supports an integrated research project among the Department of Ecology at Montana State University, Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks Department, and the Montana Cooperative Fishery Research Unit investigating mechanisms associated with trout population declines.
Field work will include driving, administering surveys to recreationists, collecting passive survey returns, and data entry. Housing and field vehicles will be provided at no charge to technician. Schedules will vary but aim to be hitch-style to provide ample opportunity to explore and recreate. These positions are a phenomenal opportunity to gain valuable fisheries, human dimensions, and conservation-related experience, as well as work and live in a recreational paradise.
Suitable candidates will demonstrate an interest in conservation-related research and be able to work in challenging conditions (e.g., long drive times and distances). Previous experience will be considered. Applicants must hold a valid US driver’s license. The positions will require being stationed at free provided housing (near study sites) only during allocated shift times, completing scheduled sampling and shifts, arriving at sampling locations on time, and operating automobiles at low visibility times (e.g., dawn, dusk). These positions are limited term employment opportunities starting around May 1, 2026 (potential to start sooner) and ending September 30, 2026 with a pay rate of $17.11/hour.
To apply, please send a resume or curriculum vitae, and cover letter describing your interest in these position and relevant qualifications, and 1-3 references in a single .pdf document titled “Firstname_Lastname.pdf” (e.g., Julia_Mello.pdf) to Julia Mello (julia.mello@montana.edu). Review of applicants will begin immediately and remain open until positions are filled.
