The Great Basin Institute (GBI) is hiring a Museum Technician Research Associate (RA) to work cooperatively with Zion National Park (ZION) Museum Program staff who will have an opportunity to learn and participate in activities that support the preservation of museum collections from ZION, Bryce Canyon National Park (BRCA), and Cedar Breaks National Monument (CEBR).Project work will include addressing preventative conservation needs of museum collections, performing a 100% inventory of the collections stored at ZION, and researching the status of scientific research permit deliverables and assisting the museum curator with a variety of duties as they arise.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Rehouse collections in archival storage containers;
  • Replace non-archival labels;
  • Perform 100% inventory of museum object collections;
  • Uses Interior Collection Management System (ICMS) or similar collection management system to enter, retrieve, and compile data;
  • Uses the NPS Research Permit and Reporting System (RPRS) to conduct research associated with scientific research permit deliverables;
  • Museum housekeeping: routine cleaning of collections areas, implementation of pest management strategies, and environmental control monitoring;
  • Making collections accessible for study and reference and providing assistance to visiting researchers and park staff;
  • Assist the Museum Curator with broader museum tasks, including accessioning, annual inventories, collection room tours, research requests, and other duties as assigned.

  • Possibility of extension pending performance and funding availability
  • Full time (40 hours/week), Monday-Friday 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM

Location:
This position will be duty stationed at Zion National Park working under the direction of the Zion Museum Curator. Zion National Park is a unique geological, natural, and cultural treasure in southwestern Utah. Opportunities for sightseeing, hiking, and camping abound. Work will be based out of park offices in Springdale, UT.

Compensation and Benefits:

  • Wage: $23.50 to $25.75/hr DOE
  • Housing Stipend: $100/pay period

Job Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in history, anthropology, museum studies or related field;
  • Previous experience working in a museum setting, including processing, cataloging, researching, preserving, and housing of collections;
  • Experience entering museum object catalog information into the Interior Collections Management System (ICMS) database or other similar software;
  • Demonstrated technical knowledge in museum accessioning, cataloging, inventory, and object storage;
  • Experience fulfilling museum housekeeping, pest management, and environmental monitoring tasks;
  • Ability to work with minimal direct supervision;
  • Self-motivated and detail-oriented, possessing strong organizational skills to effectively plan and complete assigned workload within defined timelines;
  • Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with a diverse audience including co-workers, members of the public, and agency personnel;
  • Intermediate or advanced skill using Microsoft Word, Access, and Excel, with ability to manually enter, manage, manipulate, and graphically display data;
  • Flexibility to handle competing and changing priorities with a positive attitude;
  • Ability to work productively, consistently, and cooperatively either independently or as part of a team to accomplish mutual goals;
  • Possess a clean, valid, state-issued driver’s license; Ability to complete activities involving prolonged periods of deskwork, lifting and moving heavy items weighing 25 pounds or more, and regularly walking/driving between curation and other facilities;
  • Willingness and ability to consistently enact high performance standards and a strong work and team ethic in support of the goals and objectives of the position and the mission of GBI.

Other Job Information (if applicable):
The successful applicant must complete a Department of Interior Background Investigation (BI) or submit paperwork to NPS human resources indicating an active and fully adjudicated BI has already been completed prior to beginning this position.
