Organizational Setting

FAO assists Armenia on climate change issues and in its engagement on the national NDC processes with a special focus in the agriculture sector, forestry and Land Use, Land-Use Change and Forestry (LULUCF). The agriculture sector as well as forestry (afforestation, forest protection) and LULUCF (other land uses) are considered among the key sectors in the country´s revised NDC. Therefore, in line with the global mandate of FAO, support will be provided to integrate and ensure participation of the agriculture, forestry and LULUCF stakeholders in the National activities related to NDC update, implementation, as well as other climate change related initiatives in the country.

Reporting Lines

The National Climate Change Specialist will be based in FAO Office of Armenia, working under the overall supervision of the FAO Representative for Armenia, the managerial supervision of the Assistant FAO Representative in Armenia, and technical supervision of the Natural Resources Officer (REU).

Technical Focus

The National climate change specialist will perform work in close collaboration with national and international project staff.

Tasks and responsibilities

•    Provide technical input for conducting studies and development of policies and training materials connected to the NDC implementation and other Climate Change activities in the country;
•    Provide input to the process of updating, implementing, monitoring and reporting of NDC of Armenia;
•    Provide support and input to the development of climate change project ideas and concepts in line with national priorities and international funding mechanisms;
•    Conduct technical review of awareness raising and communication materials on climate issues;
•    Conduct activities to ensure complementarity with national priorities, policies, projects and programmes;
•    Participate in workshops and bilateral meetings (as needed) in the field of climate change related initiatives;
•    Perform any other related duties and activities as required by the LTO.

CANDIDATES WILL BE ASSESSED AGAINST THE FOLLOWING

Minimum Requirements  

•    University degree in agriculture, environment, climate change, land-use planning, natural resource management, environmental economics or related areas.
•    At least 3 years of professional experience in climate change adaptation and/or mitigation, specifically also in Armenia
•    Working knowledge of English, limited knowledge of another UN language (French, Spanish, Arabic, Chinese, Russian)
•    National of Armenia or resident of the country with valid work permit.

Selection Criteria

•    Strong analytical and conceptual skills, and the ability to think creatively.
•    Excellent writing skills and capacity to synthesize to formulate climate investment projects/programme.
•    Working experience with UN agencies and IFIs is an advantage.
