Country: Bangladesh
Description of the Assignment:
Bangladesh has made great strides in implementing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). However, the country is still facing multiple challenges in achieving the SDGs by 2030. Despite steady economic progress, the country has been facing pressing governance challenges. The government’s 8th Five-Year Plan (FYP) and Perspective Plan-2041 recognizes that national and local government institutions have to play more important roles in ensuring transparency and accountability. The World Bank report shows a declining trend in Good Governance Indicators, including voice and accountability, control of corruption and government effectiveness. SDG dashboard and tracker reveal that progress on SDG-16 is stagnant, which demands deliberate efforts to support the government of Bangladesh to improve governance.
As part of such efforts, UNDP’s ongoing engagement with key public institutions, including the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), Bangladesh National Parliament, Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), justice institutions, and legal aid service providers, including the National Legal Aid Service Organization (NLASO), and Women Judges Association, would be further strengthened and deepened to explore innovative solutions to governance challenges.
The broad objective of the Strengthening Institutional Services and Policies (SIPS) project is to continue UNDP’s support to the key institutions and explore opportunities to re-engage with relevant institutions and strengthen the space for dialogues, inclusive participation, and accountability. Through this project, UNDP Bangladesh will expand its engagement with public institutions to fulfil the objective of SDG 16 as well as to strengthen the capacity of institutions necessary to promote stronger democratic governance with the principles of the Leaving No One Behind (LNOB).
