Duties and Responsibilities
Background: The SDG Stories Team was established by ESCWA’s Executive Secretary to mainstream the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) among young persons in the Arab region by using the “ESCWA Stories” comic book as an educational tool. The team visits educational institutions, interacts with students and teachers and organizes activities and events for the promotion of the comic book and its objectives. The Lebanese National Commission for UNESCO is a national body that liaises between the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) as well as the Arab League Educational Cultural and Scientific Organization (ALECSO) and the Anna Lindh Euro-Mediterranean Foundation for the Dialogue between Cultures (ALF) on one side, and the Lebanese government and civil society on the other side, in the areas of education, science, culture, communication and information. In this capacity, the Lebanese National Commission for UNESCO and its Associated Schools Network is a link between ESCWA and Lebanese schools. Against this background, the SDG Stories Team is seeking the services of a focal point assistant from UNESCO’s Lebanese National Commission to support and facilitate the work of the ESCWA Stories Team. Duties and Responsibilities: The Focal Point Assistant is expected to provide operational and logistical support to the appointed focal point in Lebanon in the following duties: – Facilitating the partnership between ESCWA, the Lebanese National Commission for UNESCO and the designated beneficiary schools in Lebanon, in support of the “SDG Stories” Initiative. – Identifying 21 target schools to take part in the SDG Stories Initiative for the academic year 2024-2025, through UNESCO and ALECSO’s Associated Schools Network in Lebanon. – Advising schools and national authorities and stakeholders in Lebanon on the adoption and implementation of activities related to the SDGs. – Facilitating the flow of information between ESCWA and the designated beneficiary schools in Lebanon. – Participating with the SDG Stories Team in their field visits to beneficiary schools in Lebanon. – Assisting the SDG Stories Team in the planning and organization of events relevant to the initiative, including capacity building sessions for teachers. – Exchanging expertise with the SDG Stories Team and facilitating cooperation and partnership. – Contributing to the promotion of the SDGs, intergenerational dialogue, good citizenship and global leadership among teachers, staff and students participating in the SDG Stories Initiative.
Qualifications/special skills
A recognized first level degree in education, sociology, psychology, social service, international relations, political science or related area is required. All candidates must submit a copy of the required educational degree. Incomplete applications will not be reviewed. At least 5 years of proven work experience with NGOs, local governments and international organizations, on projects related to education, science and culture is required. Experience working with public and private schools in Lebanon is desirable.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat; and Arabic is a working language of ESCWA. For this position, fluency in Arabic is required. Knowledge of English and French is desirable. Note: “Fluency” equals a rating of ‘fluent’ in all four areas (speak, read, write, and understand) and “Knowledge of” equals a rating of ‘confident’ in two of the four areas.

Recruitment for this position is on a local basis. The incumbent is required to have the legal right to live and work in the specified working location.
