The Office of Global Research (OGR), at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease (NIAID), National Institutes of Health (NIH), is seeking candidates who are interested in learning about the work of NIAID, specifically infectious disease research in various regions and the various research programs between NIAID and international partners. NIAID conducts and supports basic and applied research to better understand, treat, and ultimately prevent infectious, immunologic, and allergic diseases.
What will I be doing?
Fellows will be exposed to a variety of global health research activities that focus on selected infectious diseases of substantial health importance in developing countries. Projects range from science diplomacy, bilateral research programs (U.S Japan Collaborative Medical Sciences Program, Indo-U.S. – India Vaccine Action Program), multilateral initiatives (e-ASIA Joint Research Program), opportunity-driven scientific engagement, communication efforts, and analysis of regional biomedical capacity and research.

As a participant you will learn about different NIH support mechanisms and different collaborative research programs involving NIAID, how to use various NIH and NIAID databases for data analysis, how to identify metrics and key indicators needed to evaluate any program, how to compare success between different types of collaborative research programs, how to make recommendations for future programs based on the available data, and learn the importance of science diplomacy in improving international relations.
Where will I be located?
The appointment is full-time at NIAID in Rockville, Maryland.
Benefits
The selected candidates will receive a stipend as support for living and other expenses during this appointment. Stipend rates are determined by NIAID officials and are based on the candidate’s academic and professional background. In addition, NIAID may provide a supplement to the stipend to cover health insurance premiums for ORISE providers, as necessary.
Length of Appointment
The appointment is typically for three to six months, contingent on the availability of funds.
When are selections made?
Based on funding availability and available projects, the NIAID actively reviews applications throughout the year and looks to fill opportunities as soon as qualified applicants are identified.
Nature of Appointment
This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID). Participants do not become employees of NIH, NIAID, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits.
The qualified candidate should be currently pursuing or have received a bachelor’s, master’s or doctoral degree in one of the relevant fields.
