We are now seeking a National Reconciliation Coordinator to join our team where you will take a lead role in developing and implementing Canteen’s Reconciliation Action Plan(s)(RAP). This is a high-impact role for an experienced Reconciliation Coordinator with a natural ability to connect and support.

About our role

The National Reconciliation Coordinator will work closely with internal stakeholders, external organisations, Elders, community members and young leaders, to proactively develop strategies for reconciliation initiatives, such that Canteen strengthens its responsiveness to the needs of First Nations peoples and educates staff to provide quality service provision to the community.

The role will lead RAP projects, planning and implementing a range of initiatives whilst engaging Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander stakeholders. The role will support Canteen to embed reconciliation practices in all areas of the organisation. The role will also contribute to the safety and quality of care for service users and their families to ensure continuous improvement of service delivery.

Key Responsibilities

Area 1: Reconciliation oversight

  • Develop professional and supportive relationships and networks with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community leaders, organisations and young leaders to facilitate effective consultation and decision-making structures for the development and implementation of Reconciliation Action Plan(s).
  • Develop and maintain relationships with the Young Adult Reconciliation Network, and support the YARN in their engagement with Canteen, respecting the lived experience of the group and providing opportunities for the YARN to assist to strengthen Canteen’s reconciliation journey.
  • Act as a central point of contact and coordination for all RAP commitments by working with each person/department responsible for actions and deliverables.
  • With support from the Head of Clinical Services and Reconciliation, co-chair a Reconciliation Action Plan Working Group focused on the ensuring the identified key deliverables of the Reconciliation Action Plan(s) are completed to a high standard.
  • Work with the Reconciliation Action Plan Working Group and other key internal stakeholders to develop strategies for reconciliation initiatives including cultural learning, employment and procurement.
  • Carry out RAP deliverables assigned to the role to a high standard.
  • Take a lead on creating supporting documentation, information, reports and processes.
  • Provide advice and support to the Canteen staff on engagement with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people, Elders and community groups where applicable to strengthen cultural competence.
  • Organise and manage internal and external events to recognise and celebrate dates of significance.
  • Work with the Marketing & Communications team to effectively promote the progression of the RAP to internal and external stakeholders.
  • With support from the Head of Clinical Services and Reconciliation, review existing organisational policies and recommend improvements to improve inclusivity within the workplace.
  • Ensure that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people are central to the development and/or implementation of effective strategies, activities and resources.

Area 2: Canteen Team

  • Work effectively and professionally to the Head of Clinical Practice and Reconciliation, reporting all incidents, near misses and equipment repairs.
  • Participate in and facilitate relevant internal meetings, planning meetings and the all-staff national conference.
  • Ensure all promotional materials and social media activity and documents are compliant with Canteen’s brand guidelines.
  • Attend and promote Canteen at relevant conferences and networking forums where appropriate.
  • Adhere to all child protection policies and procedures including monitoring ‘working with children checks’ for volunteers and local leadership participants.
  • Commitment to supporting the Canteen Strategic Plan and contribution to annual performance and budget planning. Deliver on budget expectations and KPI’s as agreed with management.
  • Accurately record relationships and activities in relevant databases.

Area 3: General duties

  • Assist with budget projections for coming year where requested.
  • Maintain budget limits as agreed with the Head of Clinical Practice and Reconciliation
  • Work with the Head of Clinical Practice and Reconciliation to identify and participate in appropriate professional development.
  • Maintain awareness and knowledge of Canteen policies and procedures.

About You

  • Relevant tertiary qualification and/or proven experience in a similar position.
  • Experience working with the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island communities in advocacy, health promotion, education or leadership development or other relevant experience.
  • Knowledge, understanding and appreciation of cultural diversity, in particular Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures.
  • Current open driver’s license, ability to obtain a first aid certificate and the flexibility to travel interstate, work weekends and evenings (with notice) are essential.
  • Excellent computer and digital communication skills and a natural ability to connect.
  • A compassionate values-based approach.

*Due to the nature of Canteen’s work, you will be required to (very) occasionally work weekends and evenings. Advance notice will be given when this is the case, and Canteen does have a Time off in Lieu policy for taking leave as agreed with the supervising manager.

Employment Expectations
