The Utah Department of Natural Resources, Division of Wildlife Resources has a seasonal position (no benefits) available in Springville, UT. This appointment will last from mid March through June 2024, with a possible extension until the beginning of October 2024. Housing is not provided.

Introduction:

Are you interested in and passionate about working to help conserve Utah’s native aquatic species? Do you enjoy spending your time outside? This position may be for you! From the Wasatch Front to the West Desert, Central Utah is home to a diverse number of aquatic species. This seasonal Native Aquatics Technician I is a great way to gain experience in Fisheries or Aquatic Biology. This position is primarily tasked with assisting the Native Aquatics Biologist with the surveying, monitoring, and conservation of Utah’s aquatic Species of Greatest Conservation Need.

Primary Duties:

  • Assist with population monitoring, distribution surveys, and conservation projects to benefit Utah’s native aquatic species including Columbia Spotted Frog, Boreal Toad, Least Chub, Southern Leatherside Chub, mollusks, and other aquatic species of greatest conservation need
  • Assist with conducting with stream, spring and pond surveys using various sampling methods including: backpack electrofishing, seining, minnow traps, pit tagging, visual encounter surveys, and snorkel surveys
  • Assist with habitat restoration and conservation projects
  • Assist with the collection, identification, and curation of aquatic species
  • Collect, enter, and analyze data
  • Participate in public outreach and citizen scientist projects
  • Maintain equipment and sampling gear
  • May assist the June Sucker Biologist, Sportfish Biologists or other aquatics staff with sampling, restoration, or outreach activities as needed

Qualifications:

Job Requirements and Skills:

  • Applicants must be 18 years of age or older and have a valid driver’s license at time of employment. Applicants should have the ability to work independently and follow written and verbal instructions. Applicants must successfully pass a criminal history background check upon hire.
  • Preference may be given to applicants who have prior fisheries/aquatics experience, outdoor experience, or water experience. Preference may also be given to applicants that currently have or are in the process of obtaining a related degree.
  • Knowledge of aquatic sampling methods, aquatic species identification, data management, and public outreach skills are desired.

Working Conditions:

Applicants must be willing to conduct fieldwork for an extended period of time in a variety of weather conditions. Work requires physical exertion. May require the ability to stand; walk over rough surfaces; bend, crouch, stoop, stretch, reach, lift moderately heavy items (up to 50 lbs.) in a recurring manner and/or for long periods of time.

Work Schedule:

Typical Work Schedule is from Mon-Thurs, 7am to 5pm (10 hrs/day). Occasional overnight and Friday work may be requested.
