Fairmount Park Conservancy brings parks to life. We work with the City of Philadelphia and its communities to steward our parks and nurture our shared environment, cultural resources, and public health.  We lead capital projects and historic preservation efforts, foster neighborhood park stewardship, attract and leverage investments, and develop innovative programs throughout the 10,200 acres that include Fairmount Park, six other watershed parks, and more than 130 neighborhood parks and gardens around the city.

Position Overview:

Fairmount Park Conservancy is seeking a Natural Lands Field Coordinator. The coordinator will be responsible for carrying out and coordinating the maintenance priorities of forest, meadow, wetland, and general habitat restoration projects executed by Fairmount Park Conservancy. This is a three-year grant-funded position.

The Natural Lands Field Coordinator position will report directly to the Natural Lands Manager as part of Fairmount Park Conservancy’s Places team.

Responsibilities:

Duties broadly focus on asset management on behalf of the Fairmount Park Conservancy and include the following:

  • Regularly visit and monitor tree planting sites in park natural areas to assess and execute maintenance activities to address threats as they emerge, in coordination with Philadelphia Parks & Recreation Natural Lands team
  • Coordinate with partner organizations and outside contractors to ensure that tree planting and maintenance is successfully implemented by various organizations at priority sites
  • Help develop and compile informational materials for use in training partner organizations in sustainable forest management and maintenance practices
  • Collect data in ArcGIS to evaluate the performance of tree planting sites on parkland to improve recommendations around species, diversity, and management practices
  • Connect with new/existing groups stewarding watershed parks to advance the establishment and maintenance of the natural lands on parklands
  • Assist with public education on the importance of natural lands at Park Friend Network Meetings, Love Your Park, Volunteer Service Days, Arbor Day Celebrations, and various trainings
  • Assist with sustainable trail construction and maintenance
  • Operate mechanical equipment (e.g. brush mower, tractor, chainsaw, etc.) in park natural areas
  • Collect data in the Collector web application for ArcGIS mapping

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Experience working in natural areas: forest, meadow, wetland, riparian area
  • Ability to identify native and invasive plant species
  • Understanding of land management practices
  • Ability to operate mechanical equipment: truck w/trailer, brush mower, tractor, drill seeder, chainsaw
  • Ability to identify and resolve problems in a collaborative manner
  • Required to possess a valid state driver’s license
  • Must be able to work effectively both individually and in a team environment
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook)

Compensation:

The salary range for this position is $45,000 – $48,000. Additionally, Fairmount Park Conservancy offers a generous benefits package including health, dental, and vision, as well as life, disability, and retirement.
