Under General Supervision the Natural Resources Manager develops and implements natural resource management plans for Park District properties; creates and maintains trails; promotes the preservation and promotion of natural areas; and monitors conservation easements.
The Natural Resources Manager will:
- Work with staff and volunteers on trail maintenance and natural areas management such as mowing, trimming, invasive plant removals, planting, spraying, and picking up trash; lead work crews in natural areas; develop best management practices for natural areas and trails.
- Develop GIS based land management plans; implements land management plans; design and construct trails; locate and mark property boundaries using map, compass and GPS; maintain trail markers and signs; maintain bridges, gates, entrance areas and parking areas.
- Conducts routine monitoring and patrolling of Park District park trails and facilities; walks trails and assess activity areas; ensures compliance with rules and regulations; prepares monitoring reports.
- Monitor conservation easements for violations, prepare monitoring reports, work with landowners to correct violations of easements. Advise landowners on land management practices in order to maintain conservation easements.
- Promote the preservation and protection of natural areas; identify and inventory wildlife species and native plants; performs habitat restoration projects, including invasive species removals.
- Supervise and train natural resources technician, reviews employee work.
- Assist Naturalist with naturalist programs; may provide land conservation, wildlife, cultural and/or historical information to the general public.
- Demonstrate regular and predictable attendance; may be required to work extra hours, evening hours, weekends and/or holidays as necessary; to handle maintenance and/or safety issues that arise.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor’s degree in natural sciences such as biology, geology environmental studies or horticulture or a related field, and one (1) year of work experience in the natural resources management or related field; or any equivalent combination of education, experience, and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
