About the Role:

The City of New Smyrna Beach is seeking a Natural Resource Manager to help build a more resilient and sustainable community. In this role, you’ll lead efforts to acquire, manage, and preserve land that reduces flood risks, improves stormwater systems, and protects sensitive natural areas. You’ll also coordinate with departments, agencies, and residents to integrate sustainability into city projects, while managing programs like land stewardship, hazard mitigation grants, and the city’s tree planting initiative. This position also serves as the coordinator for the Turnbull Advisory Committee.

What You’ll Do

• Identify and prioritize properties for acquisition or conservation easements
• Negotiate acquisitions and secure funding through federal, state, and local grants
• Engage with the community on acquisition, relocation, and conservation efforts
• Oversee long-term land stewardship, including stormwater retention and green infrastructure
• Develop and implement management plans to support biodiversity and prevent invasive species
• Provide environmental compliance reviews for stormwater and hazard mitigation projects
• Track and report on environmental performance and resilience metrics
• Lead city participation in FEMA programs (HMGP, FMA, BRIC) and manage the Hazard Mitigation Grant Program acquisition program
• Manage the City’s tree planting program and inventory

What We’re Looking For

• Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Planning, Environmental Science, Natural Resource Management, or related field
• 3+ years of experience in land use planning, stormwater management, land acquisition, or environmental permitting
• Knowledge of FEMA mitigation programs and environmental regulations
• Strong project management, GIS mapping, and stakeholder engagement skills

Preferred:

• Master’s degree in Environmental Policy, Planning, or related field
• Experience with floodplain buyouts, green infrastructure, or conservation easements
• Familiarity with federal/state grant funding
• Certifications such as AICP or CFM (Certified Floodplain Manager)
