The Tom Yawkey Wildlife Center is a 24,000-acre wildlife refuge and research center owned by the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources. The property is located on the coast of South Carolina (Georgetown County) and has a diverse array of habitat types. The property has roughly 3,000 acres of upland longleaf pine managed with prescribed fire, 3,500 acres of intensively managed brackish waterfowl impoundments, and over 15 miles of beach along the Atlantic Ocean. The property is closed to generalized public use and hunting and is managed exclusively for the benefit of wildlife that utilize the property and associated wildlife research. The Tom Yawkey Wildlife Center currently has multiple openings for Natural Resources Technicians. Natural Resources Technicians are the everyday boots on the ground employees that make Yawkey a flagship property for both wildlife and wildlife researchers in the state of South Carolina. Job duties vary greatly from day-to-day and can include prescribed burning, water control structure installation, equipment operation/maintenance, invasive species removal, building and grounds maintenance, wildlife surveying, and assisting with research projects.

Job Duties Include:

  • Assisting with daily upland habitat management activities.
  • Assisting with daily wetland habitat management activities.  
  • Assisting with the maintenance of grounds and common areas.  
  • Assisting with the upkeep and maintenance of buildings, sheds, houses and other facilities on Yawkey Wildlife Center (YWC).  
  • Assisting with construction activities.  
  • Assisting with invasive and exotic species removal, wildlife surveys, and wildlife monitoring programs.  
  • Assisting with bridge operation and pontoon boat operation.

Minimum and Additional Requirements

A high school diploma and two (2) years of experience in wildlife or fisheries work or an associate degree in the technical sciences.

Preferred Qualifications

Ability to obtain US Coast Guard Captains license and certified prescribed fire manager is preferred.  Ability to safely operate farm equipment including tractors and implements along with heavy equipment.  Ability to operate woodworking, chainsaws and other small hand tools.   Welding, boat and motor operation, agricultural and carpentry experience valuable.  Trapping, prescribed fire and outdoor skills beneficial.  Ability to collect data accurately and efficiently, lift heavy objects and work in all environments.  Ability to maintain a positive attitude and work with a diverse work force.
