This is a full time (40 hr/week), seasonal.

OPEN UNTIL FILLED with a desire for applicant to begin work by mid-May 2024.

Mt. Adams Resource Stewards (MARS), a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization founded in 2004, is seeking an exceptionally motivated and technically skilled natural resource technician to work closely with the Monitoring & Outreach Coordinator. The successful candidate will work with MARS, Conboy Lake National Wildlife Refuge staff, and other partner organizations to expand field capacity in support of the monitoring program on the Mt. Adams Community Forest (MACF), Conboy Lake NWR, Mt. Hood National Forest, and other partner-managed landscapes. The position represents an excellent opportunity to practice and/or hone natural resource monitoring and survey skills measuring a variety of parameters.

Strong field & forestry skills are required as specific tasks include:

  • Independently, or as part of a team, install forest inventory plots across a wide range of vegetation types on the Conboy Lake NWR, MACF, and other partner landscapes; collecting stand and site data (species, stocking, diameters, heights, health, etc.) to be used in future environmental analysis.
  • Performs a variety of routine and frequently complex tasks involving techniques and practices relating to natural resources monitoring, i.e., water, land, plants, animals, or soils.
  • Independently, or as part of a team, conducts surveys related to fire fuels, vegetation, wildlife; takes and records data, counts, sorts, identifies species, and performs measurements.
  • Utilizes topographic maps; photographs, and data that identify a variety of natural resource areas and conditions.
  • Utilizes a variety of tools to collect and record data.
  • Utilize Esri software (ArcMap, ArcGIS, etc) to make work maps as necessary.
  • Utilize tablets and resource grade GPS hardware and software.
  • Assists in layout of field experiments, pilot projects, impact evaluations, and specific natural resource projects.
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Desired Qualifications

  • Practical and successful experience as a natural resource/biological/forestry technician that demonstrates knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to perform tasks described above;
  • Familiarity with tree and plant species of the Pacific Northwest.
  • Familiarity with a variety of survey/inventory protocols.
  • Excellent work ethic in support of meeting program tasks and deliverables;
  • Strong communication skills, including writing abilities, that can support constructive and positive collaborations with project partners and other staff;
  • Willingness to endure potentially strenuous work in the field under adverse weather conditions.
