Summary

Assists Environmental Technician and seasonal Natural Resources Officers in maintenance and conservation activities at Town owned beaches and parks. Assists in the monitoring of shorebird nesting activities and in the communication of rules, regulations and bylaws governing the use of those areas.

Essential Functions

  • Performs monitoring, protection and documentation of shorebird nesting activities including evening patrol shifts.
  • Performs manual work in the maintenance and conservation of Town owned coastal beaches, including fencing installation, beach vegetation planting, litter pickup and any other related work.
  • Inspects vehicles at Plymouth beaches for proper permits and/or stickers.
  • Communicates and explains pertinent rules, regulations and by-laws to beach visitors.
  • Responds to emergencies and renders first aid.
  • Performs various duties following established procedures which require limited judgement in determination of the appropriate course of action.
  • Performs similar or related work as required, directed or as situation dictates.

Supervision Received and Exercised

Works under the direct supervision of the Environmental Technician and seasonal Natural Resources Officers.

Qualifications

Education, Training and Experience

High School Diploma or equivalent. One to two years experience in natural science application or participation. Satisfactory combination of education and experience.

Knowledge: Knowledge of basic ecological principles including avian biology and shorebird management. Knowledge of local geography. Working knowledge, or ability to gain working knowledge, or state and federal guidelines for protection of piping plovers, least terns and common terns on a multi-use recreational beach.

Ability: Ability to work with hand tools. Ability to document observations. Ability to communicate with general public. Ability to lift heavy materials and work under varying weather conditions. Ability to use binoculars and/or a spotting scope for extended periods of time. Ability to work collaboratively with a team as well as independently with minimal direct supervision. Ability to walk up to 5 miles per day within habitat area for shorebird survey and protection activities.

Skill: Skill in use of hand tools, small power equipment, cellular phone and four wheel drive vehicles. Good observational skills. Strong people skills.

Licensing/Certifications: Massachusetts Class D Driver’s License. Basic Life Support (CPR and AED) and First Aid Certifications (or ability to obtain).

Job Environment

  • Work is performed outdoors, with exposure to various and often unpleasant weather conditions. Required to work nights and weekends.
  • Errors could result in endangering environmentally sensitive locations, inaccurate information for reports and personal injury.
